I remember this thread, and thinking that it is amazing that solid trucks like this can still be found out in the wild.
Great news that it is getting some love.
The hackage in the cargo area might just end up making the restoration easier. Working inside the treasure chest is not easy when its closed off. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

After we let it sit for a couple years, we finally got around to getting started on the 57 single cab. We found some gates on the samba that had lots of repaints, but we had good luck with Easy Off to get them back to original paint. The gate hinge bolts on the truck were insanely stuck, so we ended up pounding the pins out and replacing them instead. We painted some wheels and got tires mounted so we can finally roll it around as well. Should be a good winter project!

The gates look like they have always been on that truck !! Good job.
How about a pic or 2 of the bed hackage, just curious how it was hacked. _________________ Tom

How do the metal guys replace the lower floors on the SC? Does the bed need to be removed or done to make it easier? That bed removed already should make the work a bit easier. I MIG welded a boot patch in the floor in a friends 59 Bugeye Sprite and it is a PITA being the trunk doesn't open. But the challenge was fun. The guys in my club were thrilled to have a thinner gal crawl in to do the job. I was happy to lend a hand since my MIG needed the exercise.

Yep, saw that, just wondering if there were more pics of how it was done, how bad was it hacked & what is needed to fix it. Seems like the buses being found the last few years are the really rough & hacked Buses, the dreggs...
Linda, I only had to patch my floor in the storage area of my Singlecab, so it was done inside, and it's a crappy area to work if you have a "single-chester"...... _________________ Tom

With those bed square rails lopped off like that wouldn't it let the bus be twisty? |

Tom, didn't you just roll the SC 90 degrees on your rotisserie and stand up inside the treasure chest to weld your bus? _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

It's been a while any updates ryangabert?
Also for those with SC's how do you install a floor if the bed is intact? This one should be easy since it was opened with a can opener
crukab, sounds difficult to patch let alone an entire floor.

I can only imagine how bad the welding fumes would be if you had to climb into the treasure chest area to do any significant welding. It was bad enough in an 11 window with the windshields out. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Shots from the shop doing mine:
Crawl in, crawl out. As Linda said, it may be helpful to have a smaller welder! I saw a big fan in the shop, so hopefully fumes weren't too bad. It's the noise that would get to me. _________________ Craig K
