Thanks guys!

I had a ways to go in 66 before I started school. In fact it would be 14 years before I was even born Laughing

Getting closer.

What's left on the to-do list:
-Buy and install alternator belt
-Small amount of electrical wiring left to do
-Decide if I'm going to install the electric rotary fuel pump I have, or buy a rebuilt Pierburg mechanical pump from Sparxwerks
-Buy and install battery
-Buy and install gas tank
-Install fuel gauge and sender
-Install bumpers
-Install side trim
-Install scraper seals and trim
-Install lower 1/4 window trim
-Install front trunk seal
-Install wipers and motor assembly
-Install throttle cable
-Buy and install front trunk liner
-Buy and install new tires
-Buy new hubcaps and beauty rings

I think that might be all that's left after 5 years!

Any recommendations on a fuel tank? I know there's some junk out there. I'd like to find a quality one that can use the factory gas cap if possible.

I think the tanks from a bug of similar year will work on a Ghia.
This one is $20 obo.

That's exactly the one I ended up buying after much reading.

This beauty sure does look good out in the daylight. This is the first time it's been on 4 wheels, and not on jackstands, since I brought the car home from paint in Feb 2022. Unfortunately not for any reason as exciting as that it's running. While attempting to install the front bumper it became clear that the driver side front bumper mount was just a tad too off alignment to actually be able to mount the bumper. A tow truck is coming tomorrow to take the car back to the shop that did the bodywork. Thankfully they're an honest crew there, and they're fully taking care of the issue. Likely it just got off alignment during the rhinoplasty. You can really see my yard in the reflections Laughing

Wow, she looks great! When I bought my 1969 replacement chassis in 2000, it looked OK, but came without a front bumper. (turned out to be a hint) When they were putting in the replacement pans, the body and paint guys told me her nose had been replaced and we had to figure out what to do about excess metal on the driver side above the wheel. They sent the car back to me with the replacement front bumper installed - then I noticed it was a little weird and saw that the bumper bracket had some damage they'd tried to fix and then installed it with the help of another piece of steel - that was sketchy. I bought a new bracket and got the replacement bumper ready again - and realized that the nose punch had damaged the front of the bumper bracket holders as well So I had to then have replacements welded on after finding a decent replacement set. It's all good now, but that was a lot more remedial work than I was expecting.

It only took like 3.5 hrs, but I got the rear bumper on Laughing
My first time doing this, and I initially tried installing it like everyone who posts pics of their install does, which is with the bumper fully assembled and with the brackets and bracket covers attached to the bumper. I found that to be quite impossible, mainly because the bracket cover seals kept falling off before I could get the brackets bolted to the body.
So instead I went in steps. Bracket covers onto brackets. Brackets onto body (much easier keeping the cover seal in place doing each bracket seperately). Then I put the bumper ends on one at a time (way easier to control and keep them from touching the fender). Then the bumper center piece. And lastly the over riders. Once it was all on, I straightened everything and tightened all the fasteners down. Would've only taken an hour if I'd done it that way from the start! Oh well, I'll know for next time now Cool

Looks awesome. The color you chose is similar to the one year only, 68 Regatta Blue, but maybe its just the lighting?? Your Ghia is really coming together. Nice work.

Thanks! Yeah, Gulf Blue L390 is similar to Regatta L50F. I don't know the details of the mixtures, but I think if they were side by side in the same light, Gulf Blue might look a touch darker like it has more grey in it, but they are quite close. The guy who painted the car remarked how it's such a typical German color for the period. You take a happy color like light blue and subdue it by adding grey, because you can't be too happy Laughing

Indeed. That's what I did after struggling with the whole assembly as one. I built it up on the car. Way easier that way.

Lovely!

Will you keep the "smoothie" rims, or do you have a set of correct '66-only rims with the 10 "sausage"-shaped cooling slots? Your '64 parts Ghia had at least one of those, mounted at front left. Your first photos of your '66 showed the 1-year only corresponding beauty rings, at least on the driver's side. Do you have a full set of those?

Yep, if you go waaaaaay back to page 4 of this thread, I picked up a set of 6 '66 wheels on ebay back at the end of 2021 that the seller had powdercoated black. I haven't quite gotten around to taking them to a tire shop to have the current tires swapped onto them. It's on the to-do list Cool

Era Vulgaris wrote:
Thanksgiving week score! I came across a guy selling 6 original 66-only wide 5 slotted wheels. He had already blasted them and powdercoated them in matte black. The asking price was way less than if I tried to piece together a set of 5 wheels myself and have them powdercoated, so I had to jump on it.

I'm not sure why the seller did 6 of these, but I'll be putting the 6th extra wheel up for sale, as well as all 5 of the VW smoothies that were on my car when I bought it, after I have the tires currently on those wheels mounted on these. So if anyone needs some wide 5's I'll have some for sale shortly!

Front bumper and side trim is on. It's starting to really look like a Ghia! Cool

For the side trim, I used the MG Midget clips (part# AHA9447) that have M5 studs. I need to take some pics, and I'll make a separate post here detailing how those went on.

As I was loading this pic, I can see I need to better align the tailpipes. Funny how you don't see that when it's right in front of you.
