I feel bad for Stephan. Between Jedi and Dredward he isn't gaining any popularity around one of (if not) the largest Vanagon forums.
I don't think they understand how their negativity is affecting other's decisions to go with his company. They're treating conversions as a sporting event as if somebody is going to win a trophy.
We've seen multiple posts from numerous zetec owners stating they are quite happy with their conversions and Bostig is a company to back. On the other hand (and unfortunately for Stephan) We've only heard from his two cronies about how we've all been hoodwinked and stupid for wasting our time and money. Bad business. |
I am not a cronie for Stefan or anyone else for that matter. I am not treating conversions as a sport either. What it is weather you do it yer self or pay to have it done is expensive(no matter what option you choose). To make an informed choice you have to sample every option you can before plunking down yer $. I've said time and time again to drive every option, not just a 1.8t. You also need to not just rely on ANY web site or sales pitch. It's the real world that makes or breaks anything. I don't think anyone is stupid and don't aim to make anyone feel that way. "Bad Business" is trying to shut someone down by provideing pics and false info to BAR not giveing yer opinion about a swap option. I will gladly not post on the thread as soon as people stop saying things about me that i need to answer. Kudos on the project ! Looks like this will be another QUALITY Bostig conversion option for the Vanagon community On a personal note, I would like to thank you (Jim) for the “SAH plug” and link for CA conversion options.
__
I feel the need at this point to chime in here a bit…I want all to know that I feel 1.8T discussions should remain off this thread as this is about the Bostig I/M Turbo Project. As a Vanagon owner and enthusiast, I applaud every individual, shop, and supplier that promotes the sustainability of the Vanagon.
On a side note, if your looking to discuss engine options this link should help..

Yeah, that was the rationale for the earlier comments about Bostig. Given their product focus on Ford engines, I'm highly unlikely to ever be a customer, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize quality, integrity and commitment to customer satisfaction when it presents itself. I've been following their on-going iterative engineering advancements from the beginning and have been very impressed throughout. Kudos indeed. If I were to go with an off-brand conversion, they'd get my dollars. _________________ Casey--

Hi All,
Thanks for having a look at the info page. Please keep in mind two things:
1) This is a development project in a beta release stage, not a product (yet).
2) We can answer any and all questions and are happy to do so. I see lot's of questions here, if you have them please contact us. It's better not to respond here since some of those answers may change.
Thanks Ben, I did read that.
Unfortunately I also need to address Edward's (Dredward's) post in this thread. I call Shenanigans. |
"Firstly, I feel I do have some culpability in the matter and I called Stephan to explain it since I felt guilty when I heard about the "visit"." If not done with malice, my appologies. However someone did provide pics to BAR
"Stephan agreed it's possible this was part of, or a starting point on the file that the BAR had on them. However whatever triggered the visit, including submitted photos etc I nor anyone at Bostig had a hand in. " Nor does Stephan have a hand in my post or actions but whoever provided pics etc should be ashamed, i am am not.
"I appreciate the guilty until proven innocent approach that Edward has, but I also appreciate that he doesn't care to correctly spell the name of a good friend. " I am not a lawyer or a good speller, my bad. I consider Stephan a good friend and a good person regardless.
"Two years ago, when I was in contact with the BAR and the CARB trying to get clarification on the legality issues for our own conversion, I referenced the 1.8t since it was an OBDII conversion, "legal" and getting stickered without the transmission from the donor and a relocated converter (neither are permissible by BAR's guidelines, but which they've softened stance on since then as Stephan told me from the visit)" before i ever considered doing my swap i check the web site provided by CARB and BAR on the gov web site. The rules are everything smog related from the donar car has to be present and working as it did on the donar. The engine has to be the same age or newer. if obd2 the diagnostic port has to be easly accesable as well and the check engine light has to function. Seeing as Stefan was able to do this gave me the green light to go ahead as planned. I've provided links to the gov site many times. If you fallow these simple rules and can demonstrate it to the ref it'll pass., "."
" The O2 sensor objection is pedestrian, incorrect, and easy to fix." The BAR braught it up and used the prev mentioned pics to show it but they weren't visible in the pics they had.
"If we were out to be calculated pricks, we'd do a much better job. Similarly the accusations themselves are passionate, but careless and incorrect. " I honestly can't say you're a calculateing prick as i don't know you personally. However even if you are or were it doesn't matter the swap as Stephan does it is 100% correct legality and function wise. I am passionate about this and the fact remains someone finked on someone else for what ever reason that lead to an unwanted visit from BAR.
" I'm baffled how well people can read into material without actually reading it." As am I.
" I think everyone needs to remember that as an ardent supporter of any group, we should recognize when we may be doing it a disservice. That, and "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" is true with no limitation on endangering only the one with a little knowledge. Our efforts and intentions are obvious from the turbo info page and it's links. " Yes they are, to sell parts. Nothings wrong with that if done with honesty, knowledge, intregity, and the merrits/quality of whats being sold.
" Now I need to go back to some actual work on the turbo project, and it is that work that will speak louder than any of the words in this or any other thread. " Yes it will
Now to all those so butt hurt by my opinions, it's just my opinions based on my experiences. I feel they way i feel and nothing directed at me has changed MY mind in the least.... _________________ Cars owned: 1979/89 scirraco, 1983 gti, 1984 gti, 1986 gti, 1990 gli, 1989 cabriolet(2.0,16v conversion), 1992 gti, 1982 Westy, 1987 syncro Westy(w/ 1.8t conversion stg1 chip), and finally 2004 r32.... |

You guys will like the turbo setup. I am the 4th install and the only non Bostig employee so far to do it. it is going great. Well thought out and just a few little details have needed to be ironed out so far. Mine is up and running with the old V2.0 gropup 2 harness. Just got a new cusom harness to put the computer under the back seat and I can give it a test beat.Taking notes and checking the documentation and taking pics.
Only the oil pan really needs to be changed. I have the 2010 cradle assy as well but the old coolant setup modified to fit on the pass side.
I will post pics at some point and always glad to answer questions.
The sweet part of this conversion is its adaptability. Plenty of room on a simple engine seems to be a good compromise. Yes, there are other conversions. Take your pick, but I have not been sorry about my choice.

Finally, "The Men" as spoken.... you must be feeling way better brother
To the clown: Read back your first post on this thread, read it carefully. I don't get your "Free bashing", I don't get it. You sound like a close minded purist.
I was always curious about the 1.8T conversion but you are not helping much the community and the curious buyer by being so provocative.
What is your point anyway??? Is it about power? Anyone and especially me can install a monster 300+ hp engine in the back of our belove van... why the heck do you think I don't do it. It make no sense for the average customer INCLUDING ME.
I congratulate Bostig for being so careful and patient BUT adventurous with their turbo kit.
I had it with that cruel animosities between converter, creator, inventor, re-builder.
I don't have half the merit with my conversion that Bostig as with their.
People like Daryl, Karl (Diesel conversion), Hans (Vanaru), Jim (Bostig), Chris (Tenc) and anyone else who venture it the lend of "saving our van" have my full respect. That also include most vendors.
I like to bug them once in a wile but I try to do it in a respectful way.
We have chosen the hard but passionate path and not the lucrative one.
I did 14 conversion this year, I'm still at -20K$ in my company bank account, I'm dead and tired on top and plague with back problems.
If we could ask B.Bob, he would tell us that he didn't have a money making business, would he do it again if he had a second life here, I'll bet he would say yes.
At the shop I have a printed e-mail of Warren Chapman (Yahoo Subi List Creator), he was still trying to fix a problem on is van and I was trying to help, this e-mail is dated just a few days before he passed away. That printed e-mail serve as a reminder that life can be short.
Be constructive next time.
It's Christmas, have a good one, all.

Hear hear, Mr. Ben. Well said.
Massive props to Jim and the boys, it's exciting, even for me, to finally see the rollout on this long-awaited project, and with the usual precision and thoroughness that typifies Bostig. Well done!
Big howdy to Daryl, we're all jazzed to see you back at what you do so well. Whatever we've got in the back burning the juice, we need you man, to make the wheels turn, so take care of yourself.
The controversy created by a single member has made a wreck of what should have been an exciting and enjoyable thread. I was looking forward to some fun reading and shared enthusiasm, the things that are great about these forums, and instead stumbled into the equivalent of a cramped smelly room with one little kid throwing his poop at the walls. If something gets your back up, dude, go ahead, write whatever you want to say, put it all in caps if you want, then read it over once or twice (correcting spelling and punctuation as you go, of course!), and then delete it. It's good therapy, and you get to keep your friends that way. Remember, it's just cars we're talking about, how are you going to deal with something that really matters if this is how you approach something so trivial. Perspective. Breath deeply. Vow to cut down on the caffeine. Walk away. "Just my opinion" doesn't buy you a pass when your opinion isn't helping anyone but just pissing everyone off. Give your opinions when you are asked; if you only have one, give it once and be quiet. Otherwise read, listen, learn, and hopefully laugh.
I hope everyone enjoys the holidays with their family and friends, in good health and high spirits! Even you, Dr. Dread. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

I will begin by saying i approached this subject wrong. I think it should be clear that the only reason i got on this thread was the fact i was angry with what i percieved as someone ratting on a friend and his work, leading to a BAR visit. The Bostig folks cleared up they had no ill intentions and i accept that. While someone did rat someone out(provideing pics and false info) for whatever reason, the way i handled it was wrong. The Bostig folks do fine work and the Turbo kit looks very promising and i am sure it will have happy customers even though its not for me.

...last week, i stopped off at daryls for a locker. His rig with the turbo beta installed looks pretty awesome. Theres some reworking of the cooling and oilpan if you dont have a 2010 Bostig, but its a really smart and efficient design. They sell the 2010 cradle, cooling stack, hc oilpan as individual items for pre 2010 kits. I have a group 10 install with 4k miles on it now. In looking at the upgrade path to turbo, it looks like i just need the redesigned 2010 hc oilpan (but the cradle and cooling would he nice). Im totally in for it, but i would like to put some more time in on my install. I have never had a problem because of the bostig-kit, but the upgrades to the roling chassis and trans have taken up a lot of resources to bring the rest of the van to be on-par with the shiney, hitech, educating bostig. |

The turbo looks like people can finally get the kind of power that they want out of the Ztec in their vans. Looks like a cool setup.
The main advantage I see to this setup is that people can install the Ztec normally aspirated first (especially if the budget is tight and your waterboxer is blown) get the thing done and drivable, then down the road add a turbo to get the kind of power they'd like. Cool setup. |

hmmmmm
for the price of the upgrades and the turbo kit,
i can get an ej instead. (the initial bostig install could have got me an ej ++++)
i'm no engine genius, but after driving an ej 22, and checking out an svx westy, i think i will cut my losses and start hunting for something that i will be more happy with.
my westy goes with the zetec, but after looking (and touching and feeling) at the many good options available these days, it just doesn't make sense to me ( $$$ or otherwise) to invest any more cash into it.
