Wow that's a lot of oil!
Super nice bus. |
Thanks!
Took the trans back to the builder, looks like spider gear exploded, messing up ring gear, piece of metal came thru bell housing, causing the leak.
Odd, as I didnt hear or feel anything that would indicate an issue.
Only thing I noticed was clutch slipped about 15 min, before i discovered the leak. _________________ ROBERT

Very unfortunate, but glad it didn't do more damage to your bus. I hope that it's not too bad of a fix and you're back to enjoying it soon _________________ The Story of my 72 |

Back and showing what I am dealing with...
I dont know much on transmissions, so after talking on the phone with the rebuilder. he seems to think the Spider Gear Exploded, damaging the Ring Gear.
If the piece never came thru the bell housing, I would have never known.
well, eventually I would have, ( yes, More to come. )
what I can't believe is that the passenger and I never heard anything, such as grinding or crunching, felt anything other than the clutch slip, no shifting problems.
Here are some pics, anyone have any ideas?
I was thinking the seal would have been the issue but nope.
Seal was intact, no issues.
Drained the Trans and this is the magnetic plug
I guess these chunks are from the ring gear.
I have access to another Bell Housing cover for the 091 but was shocked when I saw the damage.
this was the inside of the bell housing, it's like a grenade went off...
other pieces scored the housing but only the one came through.
Dropped off the trans ( 4-25-24 ). _________________ ROBERT

So since I was waiting on the transmission, thought I would refresh the oil cooler seals and main seal while the motor was out...
am i glad I did.
changed the oil cooler seals, that was all good.
Flywheel was pretty nasty,
then pulled the main seal and discovered the shims and Thrust Bearing.
they were ate up, pressed, and ugly. one shim was gone, looked like a bread tie.
Case looked ok, but endplay was at .085, ya, eighty five thousandths!
after a few long days, I am back together as a short block.
New Bearings, and endplay is at .003 Three Thousandths.
Not sure what casued this.
could it be that the shaft from the 091 trans did it?
I never cut the shaft down, as it fit when I put it in, in Aug 2023...
traveled about 5000 miles since, no issues at all until coming home from FL.
I had read where some had cut 1/2" off of the shaft, and some that didn't.
I will be cutting it when I get it back.
If you have a view on this, or if you experienced this also,
I would love to hear your feedback. _________________ ROBERT
