The Aloha is strong here on Samba.
People are always asking me about the van .After I tell them in the strongest possible language to buy a cab over instead I tell them about Samba. Been said many times but this community is what makes having one of these relics workable. Everyone here (some more than others) has helped me more times than I can count.
In the case of jealous windows (look up the derivation-interesting) my process is simple:
Find part
Order part
Install part
Wait for wife to notice and be vague about cost/redirect to how cool they are.
But even with this job I needed the Samba oracle/s
Many Mahalos |

Are yo talki,ng about the aluminum parts that stick out horizontally? If yes, that's the parts I got the machinist to erase completely to have a clean flat surface. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

| I totally missed that the vanagon window frame was mated to the jalousie frame. Using Lexan in place of stock glass, you could make any size you needed to work in the sliding door window. Nice work. |

I used Makrolon here, bc that's what was available, I don't like the glass, looks sketchy.... for the sliding door window, I'll do the same, more work involved to shorten it though (1985 and up) _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

What would you say was the time involved? I’d say not being setup, you have 40 hours in that one window? I mention that, because when you figure the cost of a used Jalousie window frame from a Bay and the hours involved, the ones listed for sale ready to fit whether they are $700 or $1500 while not in my budget is a pretty good deal. No affiliation. Say you could adapt one like you did for 20 hours at $80 an hour it would be $1600 not counting materials. Well executed. |

I too question this. Hours estimation?
Everyone who does this upgrade says they love it. I am sold on switching, but on the fence of DIY or just buying the $800 kit. Plus the $800 kit is black _________________ "Jo Ann" - '83.5 Westfalia EJ22e w/Peloquin |

FWIW I ordered two from Heritage and they are already being shipped my way.
I will report back when I get them installed.
EDIT
May not happen, shipping from UK will be painful, waiting to find out. And I heard back from EZ...$800.00 for shipping.
So may end up making them myself afterall.

Yes, but you posted you’ve done 10 of these. My second one went quicker than my first. A beginner will spend some time working on a technique. It’s like replacing the canvas. I’ve seen posts where someone can do one in 4 hours. These are the jobs you take on yourself, because you enjoy a task and saving money since our time has no value.
My point is, The asking price for these retail assemblies if they are doing the complete job well and they fit is reasonable considering the time and materials required. |

Yes, in mine I have about 40 hours in it, good guess Mark!
It was a POS to begin with though, and I was trying to figure out things to fit the Vanagon frame. In a regular fashion, it would be much faster.
The next one will be much faster I'm sure. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I saw that too and was confused. I know that the left and right side windows are different size on the later years. I would have assumed that this is the same for later RHD and LHD vans. Why wouldn't this window fit the later non-slider side regardless of LHD vs. RHD? |
It does, their wording is whack. It's the same posted in the classifieds here I think.
The left side LHD hasn't changed since 1980. |
Recieved the windows awhile ago. No charge for shipping from Heritage. Nicely made units. But they are to long to fit my slider window opening! And I took the window out (ruined the seal) already. The openings are indeed different, by one inch.
Looks like they could be made to fit with some trimming. |

The jalousie windows you got are for direct drop in into the chassis opening, not into the siding window frame . _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

The instructions are not at all clear but I think the screws need to line up perfectly into this groove. Before i go any further I am hoping to clarify.

Just as a data point for future readers:
My tintop with a build date of 10/85 (does that make her an '86?) and all the windows are out so easy to measure. The slider door window frame is 41 1/2" wide the driver-side window is about 1 1/8" wider.
I was thinking about doing a conversion but there is a sweet mirrored tint on all the rears now that I kind like. _________________ Steve |

Windows changed for MY 85, so anything built after 08/84 is MY 1985 and has a smaller sliding door window. (F 24-F-000 001 and ON)
1073mm vs 1043mm according to ETKA. 30mm difference. There's no inches in there.

I had to mill that extrusion off to use these in our vanagon. I agree they are for the bay bus or a type 2. I’d check with the seller before going further. But in answer to your question, tiny sheetmetal screws secure into the extrusion to retain it to the chassis. I’d be surprised if that extrusion lines up with the vanagon window body seam.
Since most the world is closed today, go back to the beginning of this thread and get a better idea of how these bus windows are adapted to the vanagon.
For those of us with fractional measuring tapes, 1 inch = 25.4 mm. 😉 |
