Some people think they stopped making beetles after 1957. Some people think they stopped making buses in March 55, or August 58, or August 63, or July 67.
Some think that if your beetle has a padded dash, it's an engine donor. Some think that if it has push button door handles, it's a boat anchor.
Do what you want. Ignore the elitists. Drive your VW. Enjoy life. |

I'd like to see more of the bottom one and less of the top one. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

That may be what they had planned! I would love to get my hands on one of these VW air-cooled beauties! |

My pal Tee Pee Fred's Mercedes 4 cylinder diesel powered bush bug.
It has a sheet of 1/4" steel underneath from bumper to bumper for a skid plate, for mowing down the jack pine.
He would bash cross country up in the Chilcotin in the wilds of British Columbia.
Steering brakes- Dodge 16" wheels on front- bus transaxle and an extra fuel tank in back seat area.
Engine cover made from '40s Ford hood- homemade heavy duty steel fenders
and mud flaps
It sounded pretty wild when it had the diesel
The last incarnation it got a V6 gas engine for a little more speed
cheers

Yes but it is left abandoned up in the Chilcotin plateau
Tee Pee Fred was pushing 80 when he moved to central America about 5 years ago, and is probably living in a tee pee there- his eye sight was failing and it was too cold living in the Chilcotin.
It has been 2 years since he called me.
He is a real champion in my book.
