Had not been to a concert in years but saw Shakti this past summer, (John Mclaughlin, guitar). Splurged and got seats front row center. Opening act was Bella Fleck. We were so close it was like they were playing in our living room. Mind blown.

On the 1960s my Dad took us to a small house where the father of one of his engineers had arranged to have his teacher come play sitar. Some guy named Ravi. I told him I thought his sitar gently weeped. _________________ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ |

I'd have to say the high point of Crossroads 2023 was Bonamassa and McLaughlin. Joe read the room (correctly) and piled up every cool amp he owns. See the truckload of amps? That's the Old School approach to a crappy mains mix. McLaughin's tone is a little slicy / brittle so Joe chose a Telecaster.
It's clear Joe grew up in a guitar shop. He could sell a kid the worst guitar in the store. Take it down, play the frets off it, send it down the road. Kid wouldn't dare bring it back when he couldn't play it.

Joe left his sitar on the bus.

Here's a representative Sgt. Splendor video. Bass and drums could be more "in the pocket" but it's pretty damn groovy!
I think I have a new favorite band.

I'm good with all the Iron Maiden albums I've ever heard and I'm good with all the tool albums ( more or less ). Metallica lost me with the Black album ( I remember hard core tearing patches off their jackets when that came out). The Maidens really deliver and I would highly recommend them, what an incredible library to choose from! I was hoping for "Bring your daughter to the slaughter" But I guess that would be a tad crass. |
Never been an Iron Maiden fan, but that does sound like a fun show. I saw Helle's Belle's in their original lineup over 20 years ago at the Showbox in Seattle. That was a blast!
I always find it funny when a band's fans reject them when they grow musically. Not everyone can be The Ramone's or AC/DC. Metallica made great music throughout their 40 years history, not all of it excellent. TOOL is a pretty good example of that, too. I like all of it, but for different reasons and moods. |
Thoughts?

Starship had always been all over the map, musically. And not always in a good way. I hate that song. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3โ narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

People hear music in different ways. I'm fortunate to have had music education in grammar school. Our music teacher played in a weekend band and taught us Beatles songs. More to the point, she taught us to really listen to the music.
My appreciation of Metallica has changed over the years. They were close to the first to do that "chunk-chunk-chunk-chunk" thing when it escaped CBGB and the West Coast rock clubs. I still think "Master of Puppets" and specifically "Orion" were their best.
It's like Van Halen. If you bought that first Van Halen album every Van Halen album after it was already redundant.

I bought my blue Rabbit at Suzuki of Somerville where 22 and 287 meet. I bought two of them from SoS, a brown '78 I re- sold and the blue '79 I kept. I should have kept the '78. The '79 was a turd but at least the rearview mirrors worked. They were handy for watching parts after they fell off.

Got a buddy who runs a food truck at Bonnaroo every year. Last time I asked he said he came back with $80k cash stashed in his cooler.

Zombie ought to take lessons from Jeff Gordon. Enunciate. Slow down. Look at Ozzie or even the late Tina Turner. They show us how to put on a show when we're not youngsters anymore.
