Looking for some input.
For mounting my new seat, I hoped to use the stock seat base so that I could keep the stock sliders. Today I removed the stock seat from the base and did a test fit with the new seat. No go, seating position is too high. Two options I'm considering: 1-cut down a seat base and weld brackets to the base as needed. 2- Use standard seat mounts bolted to the floor leaving the stock seat rails in place.
Option 2 is quick and simple, the only down side is drilling holes in the floor.
A question for Option 1: I'm looking through the classifieds for seat bases. Are the seat rails different over the years? Will a newer seat base fit on the rails on an older pan? _________________ Drive 'em!

Yes, up to 71.5 is the same 2 rails. late 71 thru 73 is 3 point like late bugs use. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I had a similar problem when i put in my empi bucket buggy seats... say that five times fast... i wanted to use the originals base , but waaaay to high. so then i got to playing with hieights with boxes and such and found if i added 2 inch spacers to the bottom of the taller seat bases that it was perfect... but like you are seeing i had to drill through my pans... painful... but worth it _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |

Some progress on the interior, installed the Sewfine door panels.
Picked up a second set of seat bases to use for the new seats. Mapping out a plan to cut these down.

Update on my interior upgrade. First, a recap of how I got here. A few pages back I shared that the first upholsterer did a GREAT job on the front seats but screwed up the back seat, pattern was wrong and the quality was poor. Once I got the car on the road, I found the front seats are just not comfortable for me. Maybe it's because I'm 15 years older than when I had last driven the car or maybe I just didn't remember they were always uncomfortable because it had been 15 years.
I purchased a period correct set of Cobra Roadster XL seats for the front and I ordered more of the same cloth to cover the front seats and to recover (fix) the back seat. SMS Auto Fabrics has the WORST customer service, I hope I never have to deal with them in the future. I ordered the additional fabric, they charged my credit card then never got back to me. After two weeks I checked back and SMS informed me the fabric was out of stock and they were working with a weaver to get more made, could not give me a target date. Another month of no update from SMS so I called them back and was told they still didn't have a date but they would get back to me in a couple days after they checked with the weaver. A week later, still no update from SMS. Long story short, this went on for another 2 months, no update, I would call and they would tell me they would call me back with an update but never did. I eventually got my fabric and it is nothing like the first batch. Not just that the color is a little different, the pattern is considerably different. I guess I'm glad I had to recover the back seat anyways. Typical car restoration challenges.
Got my seats back from the new upholsterer today and they look GREAT! Not quite ready to install because my modified front seat bases are not done. I have not finished body working and painting the bases and now we're into winter weather so I'll have to wait for some random 50 degree day before I can paint. No big deal, car is stored for winter now anyway. Any progress is good so I'll take the win.

Yeah, that material does look a little darker than the first set of pics. I don't know if it's the light or not, but they sure do seem darker. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Still too cold in central Ohio to paint the seat bases but starting to warm up enough to work on other projects. I have some changes for the engine I need to address: add an O2 sensor so I can dial in the carbs, modify the carb linkage mount to correct the angles, possibly add an external oil cooler. My only disappointment from the engine builder is that he did not include the thermostat and flaps. This is a 3 season car so I really need to reinstall the thermostat and flaps to get my oil temps up to operating level quickly.
Question for the group: should I be able to remove the fan housing without removing the engine from the car? _________________ Drive 'em!

You can, but it might be easier with the engine out of the car. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

A little progress. Mounted one of the seats on the base to check fitment. So far so good. Final coat of paint on the bases and they'll be ready for final install.

I'm ready to finish out the door jambs and looking for any tips or tricks. The sill plate goes on top of the door lace? Or cut the door lace to meet the end of the sill plate?
For the small bit of vinyl at the curve of the door frame, I'll fold back the bottom edge and finish with glue or a row of stiches. _________________ Drive 'em!

The sill plate fits on the steel heater channel with metal clips.
Get the sill plate fit down tight and then trim the door lace to meet it. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

It sits on top of the wind lace (upper door surround), which goes on after the little corner piece of vinyl. Like Mike says, the threshold plate goes on with clips (4 per side, and no screws) that clip onto the upper seam of the rocker and heater channel assembly.
You might want to trim some of the carpet to get it all to fit more flush, and glue the vinyl in place first. I only mention that, as it's mostly cosmetic to look "finished" when done. Start with the corner and work your way out, with the kick plate carpet being last to go on. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I expect the rear armrest damage is typical in Notch and Fastbacks and I imagine is the result of taking out the rear seat back.
Is there a trick or special procedure or sequence to prevent damage?
I'm fitting my reupholstered seat back and have attached the fronts to the modified seat bases.
Recovering the armrests with 4 way stretch pebble vinyl after I repair the crumbled foam.

In reality, yes, you remove the arm rests before removing the seat cushions. It's a must to remove them for the backrest. It's a shame that VW waited until the late model cars to incorporate the arm rests into the side panels, as that would make getting the needed room easier. Those clips for the arm rests are hard to find now, as they lose their glue as the car ages, and the clips either stay with the arm rest, or fall off into a hidden pocket along the floor never to be seen again. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

One more… for the side panels where the extra material wraps around the door pinch seam, there is glue residue on the inside but none on the door jamb side of the seam. Is it correct to glue that “flap”?
Here’s a comparison of the vinyl pattern. I made a buck to practice how the vinyl stretches.
