I've been using one half a a split pin as a retainer. It's only a bit wider than a piece of wire but holds up well and requires only the tiniest of holes in the clip boss for those times when the boss is badly eroded. I'm able to rehabilitate most of these distributors this way but there are still some that are just too far gone.

I have found that the type III distributors of this era to be particularly prone to loose or missing cap clips.

I thought I'd add this video to this thread of a German Bosch 113905205T distributor mounted on my Sun distributor machine showing the famous 3* retard for cylinder #3. I just restored this 205T this morning.

What the video is showing is the flashing arrows when each lobe is firing as the points open on that lobe. The top right arrow is showing the 3* retard on that cylinder number 3 lobe. All the other lobes are at opening the points at basically 90* from each other which is what they should be doing.

VW knew it had an issue with cylinder #3 running hotter due to the oil cooler being in the way of the cooling air flow to that cylinder inside the fan shroud. They retarded the timing 3* on cylinder number three in an effort to help it run cooler. VW finally corrected this when they went to the dog house fan shroud in 1971 which got the oil cooler out of the cooling air path. They did this by offsetting the cooler to the front of the engine.

I know this thread deals with OEM distributors, but has anyone here disassembled, cleaned, lubed and reassembled (fixed) a German 009 distributor? I bought a decent looking one from eBay and want to service it for a spare.

Yikes! That distributor was clearly stored/left in the weather. Lots of rust and corrosion in that one. A great reason why I won't buy any used distributors from the rust/salt belt.

Other than some pitting on the breaker plate, it cleaned up fine and works like new.

Some can't be saved.

Bucket of vinegar for a few days will eat the rust away. Like wcfvw69 says I pass on the rustosis items here in the west. Now oil covered that is a different story on the should I purchase or not.
