No Guts No Glory!
First I fixed any chips in the glass. I read somewhere that it's probably a good idea to do this as it reinforces the weak spots.
Then I removed the trim. I was able to take it out in one piece. I am going to use a cal look seal but I'll hang on to it in case I do this again.
I cut around the glass (no photo of that) and made sure that the glass was freed from the remainder of the seal. Then it was easy to lift the glass out.
At fist glance it looks relatively free of rust holes. I still need to clean the crud off though.
Does anyone know what the clips are for?
The one on the bottom doesn't look to be holding anything in place. I'm thinking it's not needed and might get in the way of the new seal working properly. |

Looks like I dodged a bullet.
Only a bit of surface rust to contend with.

The clips were installed to keep the windshield in place in an accident. They were started with the 1970 models to pass the "crash standards" like the "U" shaped bumper bar (behind the front bumper).
You leave the clips out when you install your new seal, as most everyone does. I think it's because the new seals aren't made to work with the clips. They were only used in 70-73. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The first hole will need to be plugged and painted (it's not supposed to have a hole there). The 2nd hole will need a piece of tape to cover it, or it will leak water into the car (after it gets under the seal). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Got the rust cleaned up and metal was coated with rust killer for good measure.
Then epoxy primed.
Then with the help from my wife put the seal on the glass.
This was by far the hardest part of the install.
The glass roped in. I don’t know why everyone says it’s hard. This was the easiest part of the job.
It’s slightly off center, by about 1/16 of an inch, but I think it’s good enough for me. I don’t want to risk breaking the glass, taking it out again. |

I forgot to mention that I sealed the drain holes with some seam sealer and let it set for a day before installing the glass. |

Looks good. The Cal look seal is the easiest seal to install. The "American" seal with the chrome trim is the hard one. On your car it would have used a different seal due to having plastic trim in it. Nobody makes that style of seal anymore, so going with either the Cal Look or the American style are your only choices. You did a nice job on it. Sealing it up with epoxy should help the repair last. And adding some seam sealer to cover the holes should keep your feet dry. Keep in mind that you might have to drop the fresh air box from behind the dash and replace the seal between it and the body, as over the years that seal dries out and will leak water into the car. By taping off the vent slots like you did, that should slow it down some. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Actually I have the fresh air box out at the moment, I removed it when I was working on the wipers. I need to refurbish the motor for it, one of the bearings is missing. When I put it back in for sure I'll be replacing the seal. The seal was pretty bad actually.
The the windshield seal, I used the WCM one. So far it hasn't leaked, but it is curling in on the 2 bottom corners. I'm not sure if I'm going to bother to fix it as the gaps will allow any water that gets in there to exit. They aren't too noticeable. |

ISP sells the air box seal. I prefer the WCM Cal look seals, as they seal to fit the best and are the easiest to install. If your lower corners are trying to roll under, I've found that a tube of 3M windshield seal/glue will keep it from rolling under. I've used several times on my both of my Notch's (my 65 and 71) just to keep the corners from rolling over/under. What's nice about it, is that you can find other uses for it too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
