I have a 64 bus that I have recently put a new Wolfsburg wiring harness in. Everything went fairly smoothly. Finally getting around to installing taillights and I can get the signals and emergency flashers to work, but not the taillights. Swapped out the wires and the lights work now, but not the flashers or turn signals. Can any of you direct me in the right direction to fix this? I do not have any wiring hooked up to the master cylinder. I'm kind of a dud sometimes on this stuff and I sincerely appreciate the brain trust here.

All 4 signals all the way around the bus?, or just the front?, or back?

Which "lights"?

Okay, the front lights work perfectly. I finally got around to installing the taillights and the turn signals and emergency flashers worked but not the taillights. I swapped the wires going to the taillights and the taillights worked but then the signals and flashers on the taillights didn't. No issues with the front lights, turn signals or flashers at all. The problem is only in the taillights. The bus presently doesn't have any brakes so the brake switch wires are not hooked up. I sincerely thank you for helping me with this.

What voltage bus?

Do you have a turn signal relay provided by WWest, or one with a KBL terminal? What relay do you have for the eflasher circuit?

My bus has everything hooked up but the coil and regulator, and it pretty much functions, so try connecting the brake switch wires to a switch and just setting it on the frame somewhere. As BarryL said

Also you know you got it wired correct when you pull up to park with your turn signal on and keep your foot on the brake and turn off the ignition and the bus goes run-off-run-off-run-off until you let up the brake
. It shouldn't change anything, but the brake circuit is actually a weird participant in the flashers, so eliminate that possibility.

When I rewired the bus I swapped everything to 12 volts. I have brand new turn signal switch on the bus. The relay and flasher relay were both purchased at Wolfsburg. Will hook up the brake switch wires tomorrow and see if that helps.

As BarryL said.

That only applies to busses wired like this.

See how the dome light switch powers the speedometer turn signal light?

If you wire it per WWest diagram and using their relays, it may not work properly because they send power to the speedo t/s indicator light differently than VW did originally - but other people report no problems.

But that seems to be more an issue with flasher/turn signals than brake lights. The other thing may be the new t/s switch, as a few folks reported aftermarket ones did not match the OG wire colors - maybe you have a wire hooked up wrong there. Note the brake switch ties into the t/s switch with a single connector, and the wire to rear lights connects with a Y connector... maybe they are switched?

Also a must to add in ground wires from each taillight to the battery neg cable where it bolts to the body.

Thought I would update the readers that had offered advice on my query. As I mentioned the bus has a new Wolfsburg wiring harness that I installed. That went fairly smoothly. Bought new taillights for the bus too. The one I put on the left turned out to be a piece of crap. The socket was sloppy and would not let the bulb seat properly. I ended up rehabbing one that was on the bus when I bought her. That fixed it and I now have lights and turnsignals all the way around. Then there was the hazzard light thing. I thought it was a bad switch so pulled it and reconfirmed I had the wires right. Fortunately I had a picture of the 6 volt application when I pulled the old harness. Then there was the color codes on the 6 volt and 12 volt harnesses were not the same. Turns out I had two wires crossed. Figuring it out was fun as it was like I was looking in a mirror upside down trying to decide where to put the wires. I now have hazzard lights. So there you go guys. I have lights! Thanks for everyone's advise helping this old toad.
