Congrats,
I looked that Binz over in person at the Treffen swap meet three weeks ago. It is nice but certainly needs metal work and panel replacement. The area behind where the rear seat sits and back by the gas tank was rusty. The third door hinges are interesting. I spoke to the owner there and he showed me he had a replacement door with the correct hinges and. The rear taillights were also kind of cool; I have no idea what they originally came on? I think you just need to track down the rear seat or have one fabricated. When you are ready to dig into this one and start the restoration, please start the thread on here to document the work. I'd love to follow along. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Is it originally White or is the interior just painted white? |
It is originally Dove blue according the prior owner.
The previous owner told me he recently imported this truck back into the US. I guess it had been in a collection in Japan for a long time. It did originally come from the US before it was exported to Japan. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Yes, as was said on this thread I believe it was originally Dove Blue. Researching a rear seat now. Will keep you posted!

Were the bumpers, beam and rear apron just sitting in the bed of the Binz as pictured for the transportation from CA to FL? |

If it was Kelly’s AKA Metwiz not only is it an historic legacy, you are likely to find carefully-made handcrafted metal parts, from before repro sheetmetal parts were avaialable. And some nice welds. _________________ Craig K

As for the transport on the Semi from CA to FL we wrapped and taped the pressed bumpers in cardboard and a blanket and placed them in the cab of the Double Cab for safety from the elements. The rear apron was installed on the truck and the front beam was a bug beam so it was left with the seller.

Just ordered tires for the truck yesterday. And yes, it will take some time but will get those wheel wells welded up nicely.

The front and back do look like pretty nice. The sides will definitely need some love. I am putting an order together now from Wolfsburg West for some metal and other goodies!

Unfortunately Kelly got sick before he could restore his Binz. He was so backlogged with other busses that he never got to his. But he was definitely a metal shaping genius and if it is the same one you have a special bus. It’s been decades since I seen his but it looks very similar to it.
Either way it’s an awesome bus that you’ll spend hours at shows trying to explain to people what it is. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Not sure this site is being updated (was always a fave of mine), but I do believe that Binz 73 was Kelly's:

How do you think we can confirm if it was Kelly's back in the day? Did he post any photos of it in his shop?
