Trying to replace my Bowden tube. Does the bracket towards the rear of the car come off in any way? How do I get this thing off. The front of the bowden tube comes off no problem (the end towards the front of the car) but the rear that goes through that bracket is not coming loose?

66 bus.

Feel like a dummy but I can't get it off or see any kind of seperate bracket. It looks like the bracket is part of the transmission.

That bracket is part of the side cover and it does not come off like the later model Beetle ones do. I just did this job yesterday, I pulled the inner cable about 3 feet back and then I pulled it off from the other side and it fell right out. The Bowden tube is super stiff when bent in place, but it will move. Good news the side by the torsion only needs to pull back like 1/2 inch and it is off. The side shown in this picture would have to slide much further back.
Good Luck, you can do it.

Hard to say from the blurry pic, but it looks like corrosion. Repeated application of PB blaster accompanied by heat and sideways (up/down) hammering should make it behave. Don't whack it hard inwards toward the trans, you might break the cast bracket.

Since the front is out... I’d get underneath in the front of the bus & pull the cable forward a few feet.

Then get a small piece of wood to place on the rear Bowden tube opening... tap it with a hammer. I know, there’s tons of room... haha

If it doesn’t budge... I’d try to free up motion by twisting it with a smaller pipe wrench or faucet wrench.. adjacent to the cast piece, on the front side of it.

ok got it on. new problem. should i be able to thread the washer on without moving the clutch rod on the transmission? right now the end of the clutch cable barely makes it through the eye of the clutch rod. I have to pull the clutch rod forward to get eniugh thread to put on the wingnut but i cant put two hands up there to both pull the clutch rod forward and put the wingnut on.

its a brand new wolfs west cable.

Do you have a bungee cord holding the clutch pedal up?

pull the lever forward and put something behind it to brace it. you can also loosen the cable up front and push it backward to get it started

Lots of posts on doing this repair on the side of the road. I have no idea what they are talking about. Needed a strap lock just to get the clutch rod back enough so I could put the nut on.

Had to jack the bus up at least a foot so I could get under it.

How on earth does anybody do this "on the side of the road"
