|
|
I am installing (attempting) CB drop spindles on the front of my '63. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to someone who has not attempted to do the CB spindles on a King Pin front end. I have done it before on my '67 'vert (balljoint) and it seemed pretty straight forward. I have disconnected everything from the factory spindle and am attempting to get the spindles off the torsion arms.
Thanks in advance for all the assistance.

from where you are at, it's pretty easy. Unbolt and remove the clamping bolts for the link pins. Then carefully tap outward on the square heads of the link pins (fat punch and hammer) alternating between the upper and lower pin, and the spindle assembly should come out.

Thanks for the response. Is it difficult to take the king pins apart once they are out of the car?
Thanks again for the advice.

| you need to take the king pin out its the long pin running vertically, I reccomend using a brass piece of pipe and hitting it with a hammer if you cant access a press. |

| I installed mine last week. Everything went well except for the king pins. After beating on them for a couple of hours I went to a machine shop. If you don't have access to a press I would suggest having a machine shop press out the old bushings and pins and install the new ones. $37.18 and 2 hours later they were done. Hope this helps. |

| I just installed the same drop spindles on a 64. 6-ton hydraulic was not enough to get king pins out. I tried propane in conjuction with the press and that still did not do it. I had to heat with acetylene while applying pressure then the king pin finally came out. micrometer indicated there was a .010" press . Someone should design a splined spinlde/knuckle. |

I want to thank everyone for the responses. I took the spindles to a local VW Speed ahop and they rebuilt the king and links with the lowered spindles and I just need to install them.
Thanks Again!! |

I have another question. When installing the spindles, are there any "tricks" or suggestions to re-setting the camber?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Camber is set with the shims that should have come in the rebuild kit, check a Bentley or the Idiot's Guide for simple, easy instructions. Once you set it, forget it. Toe in will need to be done at an alignment shop, or you can get it real close using the yardstick trick, also found in the Idiot's Manual. _________________ Looking for aluminum single port Kadron manifolds. |
