I know that my clutch is nearing the end of its life but I tightened it up a bit the other day because shifting has been a bit hard...after I tightened the cable some, it was working great but now the clutch pedal doesn't pop all the way back out...is it too tight or is it time to replace the clutch?

Does the clutch feel spongy? You might want to replace the cable 1st, then look into the whole clutch. Cable is less than $10 and takes 15 minutes to install, it is a good thing to keep in good order. In the event you change it out and the clutch still feels weird, then look towards the clutch itself.

I replaced the cable about a year ago...I was told that there is not much room for adjustment so I'll start saving my pennies for a clutch replacement.

Your release bearing is in mortal danger with no freeplay at the pedal. If that thing is pressing against the pressure plate, it will overheat in very short order. Do not delay getting your free play back, (3/4-1"). If you find then that the clutch is still misbehaving, it is time to yank the engine.
