Kind of an odd thing. I have had it happen when the engine was really hot on a 356A that had a cracked ring. Took a backfire while cranking to start it. You could have a leaking float valve causing the carb to overflow with gas.

Cool indeed!, flames would be awesome! Razz

Has this suddenly come on?, was the engine running well before this started happening? have you been playing with timing, plug wires, valves or carbs in the last few days?

About 30 years ago my friends and I were driving my beetle to the Great Western Forum for a Kings game in LA. We were in the ghetto when a car came up to us and said we were shooting flames out of the tail pipes! I quickly turned onto a side street and asked my buddies to get out and watch to see if there was any flames. They got out and I drove away and I noticed that people were standing on the front porch of each house I went past and then I made a u turn to go back to my buddies. I get up to them and they leap into the car telling me to get the hell out of here, there are no flames! Laughing

Take any bus on a dark night and go down a long hill in fourth. Halfway down turn off the key then turn it back on at three fourths to seven eights of the way down the hill. To add more fire, while the key is off, floor it.

OP might have intermittent ignition problems.

When done doing that, go to parts store and buy new muffler.

Used to love doing that in my 63 bug. Going down a steep hill, turn off the ignition but leave it in gear, then in about 10 seconds turn the key back on. Boom.

Thinking completely about safety, drizzle some gas down the carb and then try to start it. Your fuel pump will most undoubtedly be gaflooey.

I use to have a lowered bug with a Baja exhaust on it that would shoot monster flames up in the air. We would cruise all over and just laugh.
