I picked up the new car today and I wanted to find some bare metal or primered hub caps. I looked at BFY and Wolfsburg West and didn't see any. Anyone have any ideas on painting the chrome ones? I know you can paint chrome if you prep it right but I'd rather not go through the trouble.

I bought a set of original std hubcaps a while back Steve, haven't stripped them yet. You could probably find a set of original chrome ones with bad chrome but no dents, and media blast them to strip the chrome off, then primer, scotchbrite and paint.

I'd try to find some originals before I went for repros. Of course....

Any chrome shop will strip the chrome off them for you. Then put some "Heavy duty" paint remover and let them sit under the sun. Later rinse them of with water and paint them and you will be good to go.

I said paint remover because they will probably not get the copper off under the chrome that's where the paint remover comes in.

John you ever try blasting chrome?

Yes I have. Black Beauty will get it off at 120 psi, but you have to "lean on it" a bit. Small handles and stuff are pretty easy. I agree that a set of hubcaps might be tedious, if you can find a chrome shop that can dip-strip (reverse electrolysis) them, that is the bast option.

Those repros in the link above don't look too bad....

You'll definitely not get anywhere blasting chrome off hubcaps, even if its flaking off, and if you do you'll risk seriously damaging them. Quality chrome shops can acid strip the chrome and if they are really good from my experience they can also get down to bare metal for you to repaint thereafter, good luck.

Steve,
I have a buddy in Petersburg that works at a chrome shop. I'm getting my hubs de-chromed, and the '61 is getting it's bumpers re-chromed. I'm waiting until after vacation to do this, but maybe the more shit we give him at one the less it will cost. Not too sure how fast you want it done though?

What are the differences between those above and "bus" hub caps?

Can I use bus hubcaps?

they are the same but those are powder coated. Good luck getting that off if you want to paint them a different color. But if you want them grey then you are all set.
