I plan on helping a buddy replace a clutch on a 1969 bettle. I suggested that perhaps we should change the input shaft seal at the same time.
Is this a straight forward procedure or a complicated task?
I never looked at the job in the past. We do not know if it is failing, we were changing it just because the clutch was going to be out. Thanks for any replies. Dave

The old seal can be a pain to get out unless you have a seal puller tool, like this one:

With that tool, I like to use the longer end, work it into the seal past the tranny input shaft, then "tap" on the other hook with a hammer to set it into the rubber of the seal, then you pry on it and the seal will pop out.

Installing the new seal is easiest if you have a piece of steel pipe about the same size or slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, and long enough that you can slip it on over the input shaft and have enough room to use a mallet or hammer to tap the seal home. You shoud oil the sealing lip of the new seal before you install it. Some people put some permetex or other kind of gasket sealant on the outside of the new seal. I used to, but I've found they fit in there so tightly that I don't need to (well, put it this way, i've never known one to leak that was installed without any sealant)

Thanks for the heads up. The last thing I wanted to do was to mangle the old seal and not be able to replace it. I appreciate the reply.

IMO that is a bad approach. If it is working well, don't mess with it. Without the proper tools to remove it (without damaging the shaft or bore), and the proper tool to install it, you are more likely to CREATE a leak by fixing something that ain't broke.

I usually leave mine in place too. But.... I do remember the very first time I had pulled an engine and replaced it, in my 62. I didn't even think about that tranny input seal, it wasn't leaking so I left it be. Next time I got on the freeway it blew out on me! So I had to go in, yank the engine and replace it, along with the clutch disc. But the seal that was in there may very well have been the original one, and at that point it would have been 28 years old and ready to die. Now, if it's a seal I know that's been replaced in the last few years, then I'll leave it be.
