I know this is a impossible question, but I value your input.
Am located in the Mid Atlantic Region.
My Thing is apart, off the chassis, body is sand blasted, no wreck damage, all undercoating removed, and no rust. Body has small dents that need attention.
Wheels, frame (upper & lower), were sand blasted and are in etching primer.
Fenders have no rust, but are original.
What do you all think is a ballpark price to paint? I will reassemble.
Thank you all in advance for your input. |

I might suggest you take pictures and get several estimates from local painters. Depending on quality of work and materials used the range can be pretty wide. Will this be a show car, weekend warrior, or a daily driver. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

| The figure I commonly hear is 4K to 6K. However, if there's no hurry to get it done talk to shops and tell them you can bring in the car during a "down" week, that way they can work on it without the pressure of a fast turnaround like you have with a daily driver |

| About $150-200 for some alkyd paint, a few others supplies, and many hours of prep. With the right additive to get the paint to lay down well and the right roller you should be able to get pretty good results. |

Wildthings is right, just make sure the spackleing job is smooth. _________________ Supposed to be 77käfer, but there are no umlauts on an american keyboard

I took every quarter panel off, bumpers, doors stripped the interior, dash seats, everything including the motor and took windswhield frame apart. Handed the blaster and painter these parts to paint/strip then I reassembled.
Media blasted to sheet metal at a good shop old school shop that didn't warp the metal for $375. The auto shop was a high end shop, he painted the entire car and did some mild mody work ie..cutting out rust welding the spots in front of the tires that had rust about the size of a dime...anyhow, I was charged $2200. I also provided the POR15 for the pans, of which they did a great job spraying down before painting the body and quarter panels. This was in Los Angeles...do some work yourself and save, otherwise pay 4-8 grand and have the work done by somebody else. |

| How much paint does a full repaint take? Will a gallon work without having to thin the crap out of it? |

A gallon should be more than enough. |

I stripped mine down the the body on rolling pan, removed Everything except the wiring. Body man replaced a rear corner, shaved the fuel filler and closed up some holes in the front apron(from an old spare tire mount) and painted the complete body inside and out(trunk/engine bay included), adn did some custom graphic work for me.. this was in 2010, and I paid $2200. It's not a concourse car, but has received some trophies and I am more than pleased with it and proud to have strangers admire Our Thing! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

A lot depends on what paint you use just the paint the top color on mine from a paint shop was $1000.00 and that was wholesale of course the paint was for a Lamborghini that does not include the primer masking tape sanding paper and other supplies. It also helps when you have a brother that does it for a living and has access to a good paint booth. Remember the paint is what makes the car or breaks the car the first thing is the finish that one sees dont do something you will regret later on.

I painted my bus in 1990 with 13 cans of Rustoleum, never regretted it for a minute. The OEM paint would have been 16 years old and was absolutely horrid when it got covered up. The Rustoleum still looked pretty good at the same age. |

I did mine in John Deere yellow spray cans which is almost an exact match to the original yellow that the car was painted.
It came out pretty good. Since I live on a dirt road and my car spends a lot of time off road it made no sense to spend a lot of money on a new paint job.
Every six months or so its easy to touch up the stone chips on the fenders with the JD spray paint. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

HI,
I've looked but cant find the post anymore,
SOMEONE On the Samba painted their THING Krylon Orange with about 32
cans.
They did a really nice job too, was suprising how good it turned out.
It would be nice to be able to paint yourself that way if you screw it up you can fix it without having to put out a few thousand dollars.
Anyone remember that post? it may have been in the "what did you do with your THING today" not sure.

Thank you all for your input.
It seems that I have some more work to do!
This is not going to be a show car or a daily driver.
My goal is to have a rust free Thing, for Sunday drives with the family or a date with my wife!
Thank you all again. |

I do remember that post as it gave me the inspiration to paint my car with rattle cans. When I tell people I painted it that way they cannot believe it looks as good as it does with spray paint.
I think my local JD dealer was wondering what I was doing with all the paint I way buying! _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |
