Hello,

I just picked up my new project. None of the keys that came with it, work on the doors. Meaning I can't lock it up.

Can anyone suggest how I can tell if all the lock mechanisms for the front doors, cargo door, and engine lid are keyed the same? If not, say one's an oddball, can I get all the locks the same and then a key made from the code(s)?

Thanks for the help.

The handles and the ignition switch all have the key code on them. Take them off and take them to any locksmith, and they can make keys and if they are not all matching they can rekey them to match each other as long as they are all '67 L code lock cylinders.

The cargo door handle likes to break on '67s and usually gets replaced with an earlier unit.

Thanks Lind. I went back and tried the two different keys I was given again in the light of day. One is the ignition, which is keyed different because this truck has the locking Neiman switch. The other key does seem to work for the doors.

I guess I was just used to my past 61 DC where the key went in horizontal and then it was a 180 turn to lock it. This 67 the key goes in the thumb button and seems to lock with a 20degree turn. But then not always... I'll have to take them off and have a look.

You're right in that the cargo door lock is keyed differently. I have a good locksmith in town, so I'll see what they can do. Oh the fun begins. Haven't had this big a VW project in 20 years.

Yep, like Lind said remove all the locks/door handles, clean all the grease/dust/funk off the interior/hidden from view surfaces until you can see the lock cut code numbers. If they are original to the DC, they will all have the same code (including the ignition switch) and the code will look like; L 12345 If the keys you have are "originals" they will also have the "L" number stamped into them.

Then while you have the locks/handles off, use aerosol carb/choke cleaner to soften and clean off any 60 year old grease/dirt, air dry and try to re-lube the accessible moving parts with modern grease lubricant. Squirt some graphite powder into the key hole bores to lube up the lock wafers...

What will really make a nice difference in door function will be removing the door latch assemblies found inside the rear edges of your cab doors and third door, flushing them out with solvent or aerosol carb/choke cleaner until spotlessly clean, air dry, then lubricate all the latch moving parts with new fresh grease and re-assemble. Other than accounting for parts wear over the past decades, your doors and locks will be back to almost new condition!

Usually on most Buses the drivers door latch mechanism gets the most use and wear and tear. Hopefully yours is in decent shape, but if not, I'd recommend buying NOS ("if "you can find it) or new reproduction latch(es) for greasing and installing from W.W. ( https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211837015F ). You'll love your doors and locks afterwards!

Hope that helps! You've got an awesome project there, Double-Cabs absolutely rock!!!

Congratulations!! Nice looking Double Cab. Looks like a fun project. My ‘67 Westfalia has the locking ignition switch with the same key that works every single door lock expect the cargo doors. In time, I’ll replace it with a correct ‘67 cargo door handle. Then I’ll only have one key for everything!

Does your Double Cab have the plastic plug where the USA ignition switch is normally located?

OK, I need a bit more advice on locks/keys.
Both front doors are on the same key. I don't have a key for the cargo door and the cylinder must be a different key code, because I can't even slide the front door key in to the cargo door lock.

I took one of the front doors off to try and get a code from it, but I don't see a key code anywhere? I thought it was a "T" code key, but I have an original "T" code key and it won't go into this cylinder.

Any help would be appreciated.

The key code should be stamped into the handle itself.

If the ignition key has the right profile you could also make the door locks match the ignition key by swapping around the little brass parts. You will probably have to get some extras because you usually don't have the right ones.

The cargo door handle has probably been replaced by an older one, because the newer ones tended to break. There should also be a key code stamped on the handle on the round part that goes into the door.

The key code on your front door handle is on the piece that engages the door mechanism when you push the button in from the outside (the piece that protrudes and is held on by a screw).

You can see what I am talking about in Chad's ad below. You can see the writing with the "L" code on it if you look closely to his ad pictures

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I fear that my handles and locks aren't original, but they work well and lock so I'd like to keep them. But as you can see there's no stamping for codes.

Hi Ollie,
I believe yours is a repop handle/ replacement handle.

The code should be 211.837.205.K and not J/M/K/L/

You can read more about it here

Yeah, apparently these were bought from Heritage Parts out of the UK. No stamping anywhere.

This is for your Double Cab?

If so, you don't have a rear hatch to try to get a code off of the lock so what I would do is buy a front door handle that has a code on it, use that code to key your locking ignition (this is presuming you have a 67 locking ignition), your other front door handle, and your L code cargo door handle when you find one.

That way you have one key for all the locks. Once you pick up a handle with a key code, you can send the code and all the locks to Daniella and/ or Gabe the Key guy and have them cut you a key to that code and rekey your locks to the same code.

You might even contact Gabriel (VW key/lock guy extraordinaire) or your favorite VW lock expert and see if they can locate and put together a complete L-code set of: ignition switch, locks handles of both cab door handles, and maybe a cargo door lock. He's done this before (ask me how I know).

Once he or you can provide him with a good condition L-code ignition switch as your starting point, then he can re-wafer the L-code locks in your other cab and cargo door handles to the ignition L-code. Warning! It won't be cheap! But in the end you'll be very happy! Decent condition L-code cab door handles pop up in the classified ads occasionally, L-code cargo door handles and ignition switches not so much... Best of luck!

Bill

Luckily I have a couple VW shops here in Portland. I just called Ashley at Always Vdub. I told him what I've been struggling with and what my handles/locks/keys are like. He said bring it all to him and he'll help me sort it all out.
I'll let you know if we're successful and what we end up doing.

Ashley rebuilt my door locks to match my ignition key; we then took two of the earlier-style treasure chest locks and keyed them alike, but as they are a different key profile they do not match the doors. No big deal, I just keep a copy of that key in the cab for when I need it.

A 67 has an L key.
with a steering lock, the 67 steering lock also has an L key. This means it can have one key for all locks....however, if it has an earlier steering lock, the key is different.

Also, the 67 cargo door handle is more likely to be broken. It is likely yours has been replaced at some point.

When I got that bus, the doors were really non working well. The drivers door did not open. I spent some time and took the front door mechanisms out, and cleaned the crusty old rock hard grease off, and re-greased them, put them back in the doors, and welded up the broken drivers door hinge area, and lubed the door prop bits in the front doors, and the bus actually had the old og cut out key with key code stamped on, and it worked all the locks, which was pretty cool.

key code is on the shaft. You can see the code after you take it out of the door.

OK, success.
I took the new handles I bought from Heritage Parts, took out the push button and lock. I then swapped that with original button and lock from an original ratty handle.

I installed them to both sides and they work like a charm. Now I have all 3 doors on the same key!
