Vanagon with aircooled engine (CV). When engine go hot, power lost. At cold strating all OK.
Some ideas? Or engine overhall?.. |

Check the cooling fins and the thermostat for proper operation. On the air cooled engines, it is very important for all the cooling tin to be intact, and you also want to make sure the thermostat is opening up when the engine is warmed up. This can be found under the passenger side of the engine (see picture). It expands when it gets warmed by the heat of the engine, pushing a rod that connects into the fan shroud which then causes flaps inside the shroud to direct air to the cylinders.
Also check for a slipping fan belt. I assume it's not broke! If the belt slips, this can cut down on the RPM of the fan (inside the fan shroud; connects to the back of the alternator which is turned by the front belt and lower crank pulley setup).

We type 4 engines have our cooling fan driven by the crankshaft. Type 1 engines were different.
Do a leakdown test and that will tell you about where you are losing your compression and it is likely from a valve seat.
Install a good CHT gauge so it won't happen again. Got to have decent instrumentation back there. |
