I run out of gas, then after walking a mile to fill up, it would not run
I guess the fuel pump failed somewhere along the way....

Good thing I travel with a backup electric pump and extra hose to hook it up (never thought I would get to use it....).

Tie wrap it to roof of engine bay

Hook it up to the coil (have extra wire taped to it ready to go)

I was not too far from an air cooled VW shop (how lucky of me).
So I drove back there to buy a new fuel pump.

I am still driving with the electric pump.....

Weird, I would think you would bypass the failed fuel pump but I guess the electric can suck the fuel right through the bad fuel pump?

Yes. the fuel pump is basically two arrows facing the same way with the diaphragm in between, albeit a new pump is quite the suck to draw through.

Hey don.ville,
Looking at the photos of your engine. It looks pretty clean like it might have just been rebuilt/installed recently. Got me curious, are you positive the fuel pump is shot? How many miles did it have? Were you able to check it out later? I notice your in Florida? wondered about some kinda fuel lock or something after you ran outta gas. I've never ran outta gas
in my bus ('63 15 win.) but a couple of times I've had to pour a little gas
in the carb to get cranky A/C engines to start after they haven't run in a while.
Just wonderin'.....

What about the prescreen in the tank? when the tank gets empty it moves all the junk in the bottom of the tank against the screen. A VW pump only pumps a few psi (i believe spec is 2-3.5 psi) and very little vacuum/suction. That electrical pump puts out something more like 8-12 psi and much more suction, thus overcoming the restriction in the tank.

Ok, just posted the info to vent, and to let you see what I did.

So you know, the engine (longblock) is brand new with 1000 miles. All tin is new, carb is freshly rebuilt OG solex 34 pict 3. Tank was hot tank cleaned in December, with a new screen installed. All new fuel lines, new filter.

I bought the bus very used in Feb 08. Since I have had it, EVERYTHING in the engine bay is less than a year old except fuel pump, alternator, intake end castings, and starter, so my troubleshooting was limited to fuel system.

If you see my bus blog link in my signature, I am pretty familiar with this engine now.

The electric pump was designed for this application, about 3psi, no fuel regulator required. I carry it as a spare and it came in handy, that's all

The pump came from CIP1 here:

Thanks for the tips guys.
