|
|
I just replaced the hose from the fan to the mysterious hole on the left (driver) side of the engine compartment, and I'm still getting very little heat in my '74 (2.0L FI, presumably from a later bus). I get some heat when the engine revs high, but that's it. Also, it only comes from the defrost, no the foot vents, no matter what I do. I checked the hoses under the bus, made a few repairs, but still no luck.
Does anyone have pics/diagrams of where the wires go from the levers on the dash? I think then I could figure it out...
Any ideas would also be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Ryan, Have you checked the black plastic fuse holder in the engine compartment? it's hanging near the blower motor.see if there is a good fuse in it,Start the engine and pull down on the red levers at the dash.the wiring diagram here shows the current track's as track 4 and track 5. the brn/wht wire at the lever completes the circuit. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I had the same problem last fall. I went underneath the bus and opened all the heater ducts and found mounds and mounds of old mouse nests from over the years. You may want to check at the spot where the tubes branch out. There is a flap to direct the air flow. Mine was stuck closed. I oiled it up and I now get plenty of heat. _________________ "SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE" |

Compressed air is your friend. Start at the front and remove those black heater accordian hoses and blow it all out to start with. |

The fan does work, I can see it spinning when I turn it and the car on. All this sounds good, guess I just need to find someone with an air compressor.
gr8fuldad, I think that may be my problem. Should the wires from the levers in the dash go to that branch point? There's a wire there, but when I had my girlfriend move the levers, the wire under the car didn't go anywhere... |

The most critical cables for getting heat to the front are those connected to the flapper boxes on either side of the bus just forward of the engine (get under and work forward from the heat exchangers and you will soon find them). Are these working on your bus? They often sieze up over time or get out of adjustment so that the flaps do not fully open. |

^^^ I think I know what he's talking about, but does anyone have pics? I was under there and don't recall noticing any cables there, but perhaps I was looking at the wrong thing...

.. the diverter for the foot vents/defroster is on the vertical pipe right behind the shifter, body colored metal, between the floor and the dash. Flip it up for heat down low, down for heat up at the windshield. _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5

I agree with Randy. First make sure you have all the junk out of the tubes. It's simple and it doesn't take long. _________________ Rik

Soon as I get a little more time, I'll be able to do all this stuff. It's looking like that flap is messed up. How about the second part though, what little heat I do get stinks like engine compartment. Personally, I don't mind, but my girlfriend complains.
Anything I can do?
(Besides get a new girlfriend) |

Also.....
The next time you have the engine out, remov ethe heater boxes and throughly clean them out with an engine degreaser and triple rinse them.
I would then hook up a source of heated air (ie a blow dryer) and dry them out really well. |

Cause I take my engine out all the time, just for fun, you know...
sounds like good advice, though. |

Maybe this will help (photo courtesy Ratwell). The cables are in metal tubes and attach to the flapper box at the top. Like I said, if the cables are not pulling the flaps in the flapper boxes all the way open you will not get much heat.
