My husband and I want to see if it is possible to attach an identical passenger-side mirror to his '69 Fastback. We could go to a shop that specializes in these types of VWs or do it ourselves, but want to make sure it's done properly, since we just absolutely LOVE "Murphy." Any thoughts?

I had the body shop drill and then weld in the correct size nut to the inside of the door. Or you can find a same-vintage Squareback door; they came with them from the factory.

I'm not sure a right-side mirror was ever a factory option, but I wanted the safety regardless and retrofitted it.

It took me years to find my '69 passenger mirror! It should have the extended arm like the middle mirror in the bottom row & the teardrop mirror on top. The teardrop mirrors on top are original '67 mirrors. New EMPI Karmann Ghia mirrors like the right mirror in the bottom row will work, but the shaft diameter is different. New EMPI Beetle mirrors with long arms like the lower left mirror will work, but Not original! Wink

This. The nut welded inside the door is an absolute necessity.

My passenger side nut is welded to a small triangular plate & slipped up into the pillar to match the hole in the pillar & then thread the mirror on to hold it.

I think CIP or J-bugs sells a nut for mounting the mirror to a door that never had one. In fact my old 69 Square had 1 installed in it's right door (one of the PO's swapped the door from a Fastback). All you'd have to do, is drill a hole big enough for the mirror mounting screw and then remove the door panel, so you can get your hand up there to get the nut started on the mounting screw. Tighten everything up, then, you'd just have to put the door back together. That mounting screw nut grabs the sheetmetal inside the door, and locks the mirror into position. I never had to readjust mine in the 2 years I owned it. Very Happy

Not quite "identical" since the arm has to be a bit longer in order for you to see it with the right angles form the other side of the car. Same style, yes, but it's not exactly a "mirror image."

My 73 had the factory threaded insert on the right door and it had a mirror.

I had to replace the glass on both so I got cheap mirrors with the black plastic trim around the glass and silicone them in place.

Lately they were so stiff that if I tried to turn them up or down the entire large thread would move . I took them out and added a rubber washer since the old seal was gone and backed off the nut on the spring and added a drop of oil then just tightened the nut enough so I could move them and they would stay in place.

I recall the right mirror the peen that holds the mirror head to the shaft broke so I drilled and tapped the shaft and used a bolt and washer before I replaced the glass with the cheap ones.

The right mirror glass now has that dark area spots . Some day I'll get replacements .

My '71 square has a factory threaded hole for a mirror. I just need to find one (and would like to) now. The search for all the things I would like continues on...... Laughing

Its a plastic plug. Don’t remember if it’s threaded . If it doesn’t get damaged, I’d buy it from you.

Yes its a screw. Screwed into the same thread that the mirror will then screw into. I had to destroy mine to get it out - After all, it had been in the for 50 years ! I put two holes in the face then used circlip pliers to screw / wiggle it out.

Quoting my recent experience on this task from my build thread.

My car only had a right hand mirror. That's the drivers side in Australia. I really wanted to install a passenger side mirror but there's no thread on that side.
Anyhow without any available doors to chop up I decided to make something to give the panel beater to weld in.
Vw used a standard hex nut M16x1.5 captured within a piece of folded Sheet metal welded inside the door. My solution was to make a nut with a large diameter 40mm thinned out flange so that it would be easier to weld to the thinner metal of the door skin. Welding thin metal to thick metal is always hit n miss so I turned the flange down to about 2mm. The 40mm diameter also spreads out the bending force whilst adjusting the mirror.

Here's the flange nut I made. First version I made was 32mm and it felt a bit small as you can see. 40mm is a much better size.

Drill 4x 5mm holes around the large center hole and plug weld.
Some glaze putty to finish it smooth and prime.

So you disagree & say the plug in my door doesn't hide a thread?
