Going to be getting a new header for my beetle but it will only be an intermediate until i build a bigger engine. So i don't want to spend the coin on ceramic coating on something that will be replaced. Just wondering if anyone out there has pics or experiences with exhausts coated with por 20 on car that are driven rain or shine.
thanks for any info

Used POR 20 on a 1 3/4" header on my car (which was driven rain or shine) and it did not last more than a year before showing surface rust in the collector area. After 2 years the only POR 20 left was on the lower part of 1 & 3 pipes. The pipes were new when painted and were completly stripped to the bare metal and prepped according to the instructions on the can.
If you want a coating that lasts invest in Ceramic. _________________ Richard Sedoris - VW Performance & Machine - Youngstown, OH

POR-20 lasted less than 3 months on my A1 muffler, actually the bend before the muffler. I thought I was meticulous in prepping the surface before applying, looked great for about a month, then, I guess, the exhaust heat got to it. Now it looks rusty, although the muffler is still in good condition.
I might reprep and try naval jelly on the surface rust. I'll post a pic soon of what the muffler looks like currently. _________________ 74 rusto-custom type 1 Sedan - SOLD

Well good to see that no one has had a good experience with this stuff. Don't plan on going ceramic on this header so ill just live with some rust.
thanks

I have a Danish replica of the '74 Thing muffler (translation -- it started rusting minutes after I removed it from the box).
I've started using this:
periodically and it seems to keep the rust in check. It's definitely not one of those apply-it-and-forget products, but if you don't mind adding a chore to your valve setting regimen, it's a cheap alternative that dries to a nice flat black.
Application tip: use bleach to clean your hands afterwards -- nothing else works. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

I've done it both ways (with an without gloves) and regardless I always end up getting some of this stuff on me, so I thought that I would mention the bleach tip 'cause nothing else will take it off your skin. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

So Joe how long does that last before you need to strip the exhaust and reapply?

I used the stove polish on my 72-74 stock dansk typeIV muffler. It was turning into ash white flakes in a matter of days.
