Driving the truck around, I am getting a knocking sound that seems to come from under the butt (and is very different than the sound the damn treasure chest door makes when it has popped open). I went under and pulled hard on everything, and nothing is loose to that test, but things could need more force to actually budge them... force provided while driving of course.
Everything under the bus is new except steering box/column, and torsion arm bushings and needle bearings. Needles looked ok to those who saw them, but would bad ones cause noise or just poor steering? What else to look for? _________________ Craig K

For what it’s worth, all 5 of my lug nuts on the drivers side loosened last week for no reason. We had just gotten off the highway and it started making that knocking sound. It was super close to coming off. Yikes. Worth a check.
I also have to routinely crank on the spring plate bolts, as it will start knocking when they loosen up.
Maybe not the answer, but somewhere to start. |

Try tightening your shock mounts. _________________ .

| Do you have an Anti-roll bar? - I changed the bush as one side was a little worn, and it had a knock - when I took it off it was worn right through between the bar and the lower arm - however you couldn't see it was that bad from the rubber ends that poke out of the metal clamp - it looked pretty normal. |

X2
Absolutely
I think there’s a useful list on all the hardware VW checked on the 300 mile service. Basically double check the torque on the mounting bolts holding the suspension, wheels, shocks, etc on. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Did check the lugs on unpainted wheels - all tight. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet, but Lind may get the chicken dinner: ALL the shock bolts had backed off; not enough to move when pulled on but clearly not snug. I'll try and test tomorrow. _________________ Craig K
