Toe in spec 1/8”. I installed radials, does everyone still stick to that number. Seems to me on other cars with radials were set to 0”.

My radials have been fine at 1/8" for zillions of miles with no weird wear pattern of weird steering. |

When I did alignments on bus's and bugs back in the 1980's on Bear alignment racks, we always set the toe in to 1/16". _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The user 70bus posted the specs. for an alignment with radial tires he got at an experienced shop. Seemed to like the results. Look for that thread.
Of course, most shops don't know how to work on these vehicles, especially the rear alignment. _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |

My understanding of all that above was that radials drive differently than bias, and there are nuances to balancing wear and drivability to both... most of which we dont care about in some ways. Most of us probably buy new tires when the rubber starts to age badly, rather than the tire wore out, as we aren't driving 50K each year or whatever.
As a number of local VW people - including some racers - took their cars to that shop and were satisfied, I assume even if he is wrong on the WHY he is right on the results. I don't think 1/8" is too far off where he set mine but I'm not good at math (or finding an online calculator). Most of slop in driving is worn parts, not tires, and I had everything new except steering box - which, after driving home in 40 MPH winds Saturday, is next to get done!
On my bay, new tires and toe-in work did nothing, until I changed my rear torsion donuts.
Try 1/8" and see how it feels. Easy enough to experiment and find what feels best to you, if a bit time-consuming. _________________ Craig K

| Ive tried 1/8 and 1/16 just out of curiosity and if my butt is accurate, 1/8 feels more stable on the fwy |

Here you go - direct from the 'Instruction and Maintenance Manual' OG Owners book... I still use these figures on modern radials.
