I have a tach/dwellmeter. I have been hooking it up to my coil (-) form dist and a ground. I get 900 rpm on an 8cyl scale isn't it supposed to be 450 on an *cyl scale. any way that would mean my car is ideling at 1800 rpm and i'm sure it's not. SO am I hooking my tach up wrong.
Thanks Paul... |

I get the same results, just added a VDO to my '76. While driving the rev needle seems to doubled and jumpy after 4k, shift levels at 6k, I know its not at redline, based on an idle of around 1200 rpm. Does anyone know what the typical redline level is (for the needle stop)? |

Your ear should be your initial guide.
Normal engine idle is 900 warm
( 450 v-8 scale). Rev limiter on distributor rotor is calibrated for 5,400.
The 76 should be at 3,200 at around 55.
Misbehavior of your tach or dwell meter is usually a wiring problem or extremely lousy points/condensor/distributor bushings, but you would have a lousy-running car, too.
