Hello,
I am rebuilding the clutch release shaft mechanism on my Syncro. Everything is dissasembled, but I am having a tough time removing the bushing that is pressed into the passengers side of the tranny. Any suggestions? Of course the Bently reccomends using an impossible to obtain speciality tool VW771/15.
thanks

IIRC, a blind hole bearing puller should do.
I have read of some auto parts places loaning out tools like this.
I tried making the tool out of a slide hammer and expanding concrete bolt. It grabbed but not well enough. I then did it the hard way eventually getting it out bit by bit. A few scrapes, but no real damage done to housing.

I have seen posting recommending a large tap. You start it in and as it bottoms out, it pushes the bushing out. Somebody posted a how to a while back. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

I bet that would also work well for removing the pilot bearing, another job on my list.

Thanks dogpilot. I have used this trick to remove the starter bushing and I bet it would work here, but that slide hammer looks so cool! |

FWIW, I ended up *carefully* wedging a small jewellers screwdriver in between bushing and hole then grabbed what I could with needle nose pliers eventually collapsing the bushing within the hole. It almost came out in 1 piece. Obviously NOT the right way though.
IIRC, I used an old slide hammer with a small bolt/slightly larger washer to get PB out. Some have used the grease trick. A search shall tell all.

The tap trick worked beautifully. For the archives, I used a 3/4-16NF tap.
Thanks,
