I just went through all of that mess with Eastwood about two to three months ago. There's really no guarantee of a match. You can choose their rally silver or they're Silver Base. I'm referring to Eastwood colors of course. Eastwood said that their rally silver powder was different from the rally silver paint. I even ordered a spray can of the rally silver paint to do a comparison. I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain the original paint did not have a metallic flake in it. And all three of those items that I mentioned have metallic flake. It was irritating and time-consuming and I finally submitted to something called Silver Sparkle that looks really nice but isn't stock. |

New to Samba. New to vw thing. Need sanity check on wheel and tire choice.1973 thing bug beam with adjusters not narrowed . Porsche disc brakes front and rear. Porsche steel disc brake wheels 4 1/2 front 5 1/2 back. All of this on hand. Time to order tires. Expect front to drop 2 1/2 with new beam back to drop at least the same with 1 or 2 clicks. Would like to have option to go lower front and back depending on stance. Current tire choice are 195/60R 15 front and 215/60R15 back. Tires will be 1 inch white walls. Going for beach buggy look. Should I go smaller tires?? Or will these sizes give me a little room to go lower? Or are they too big already.
Thanks for any advice,
Pete |

So, if i have 2 rims that are stamped 5jk 14, both with a date stamp of 10 67, does that mean these were some of the earliest 68 thing rims? Or did something else use 5jk14 wheels? Thanks, rob |

Great thread! Has anyone put tires on stock 14's lately? Trying to find an all terrain tire to go on stock rims.

Does anyone know if this tire/wheel combination for a 1973 Thing with stock suspension and fenders etc will positively work?
I know the largest size that will fit stock, figuring this means the front mostly, is 205/75/15. I would like to run those on the front, with new 7"X15" wheels and original back spacing and 235/75/15 on the back with the same wheels. Does this provide any rubbing issues on the stock vehicle?
Also, does anyone know the original back spacing for the original 14" wheels?

After much procrastination I finally decided to order some General Grabber AT-2 27 x 8.5 R14 tires for my Thing. I found out they are being discontinued, but was lucky enough to still be able to get them. They are being replaced with ATX 27 x 8.5 R14. So ATX instead of AT-2. The ATX look a little different. Basically the same tire but they have extra detail on the sidewall that may or may not look just as good on a Thing. Glad I found out in time. |

Just had my wheels powder coated. Took off the skinny old white stripes and had a set of General Grabber ATx’s fitted (27x8.5 R14). No rubbing even at the stops, drives straight and true at 60+ mph.

Thats a beauty!!! Newer roof and side curtains? |
Thanks! Replaced the original, warped top frame and worn out top with Thing Shop top and frame, same with curtains. Pretty painful price to pay, but I’m very happy with the quality. I try to do a little improvement each year. Definitely a marathon with a 46-year old car. |

Ok, thinking about new tires for my 73, I pulled out some NOS T3 rims (5 lug 15") I bought years ago thinking they were T2 15 in. anyways considering putting on 7.00-15 traction lug tires, found a good deal on some new one's that are bias 8 ply, any body try this combo yet? If they dont fit I can always put on my SC.

Offset is real close, I measured back spacing at about 4.4" my thing rims about 4.34, (well maybe the same, thing rims are crusty!) so should be ok for thing, concern is the 7.00-15 tire, yes if it doesn't fit in thing confines I would dismount and put on bus 15s, I know about bus/thing incompatibility, these T3 rims have safety bead, unlike 15" bus thought that was unique though! _________________ 73 Type 181
