yes, you do not use the later style "plastic" bushing. it will not fit, as you have found out already.
the early bracket and spring are totally different from the later version.
here is what the "m" springs look like out of the bracket. no, they are not for sale, don't ask. does anyone have a source for the M springs?
there may not be any bushings on the long rod either. does the long rod pass through a tube, or is it exposed when it is installed? (can you see the actual rod when it is in the bus and you are under the bus?) if it does not go in a tube, there are no bushings on the rod, only the weird 3-fingered bushing as seen in center of the pic above (no, that is not for sale either). that clips in to the front crossmember, and that is the only long rod guide until it gets to the rear coupler/transmission. if there are no holes in the long shift rod, i would guess there is no tube for it to pass through.
only if your long shift rod passes through a tube will it get the two "plastic" bushings on it. |

| Couldn't you use the later style shift guide bracket and nylon sleeve with the old shift rod or is the diameter altogether different? |

yes you can.
I think you then have to shim the shifter under the bus between the floor and the new/later guide. you can use a couple washers. I think it needs a bit more space there if you do it that way. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

i had a later (post 59) front bracket and bushing on my 59 and it made shifting difficult. i found the correct early parts, put them on, and since then the shifter works great.

i got a quote from a spring manufacturer this afternoon. this will NOT be an inexpensive proposition. however, if anyone is interested in getting some, please PM me and i will start a list to see if there is enough interest to warrant spending the money on this.
it looks like i would be able to sell them for between $25-$30 each, and that would include shipping. |

McMaster-Carr sells spring steel for penneys. I would think that someone with an og to copy and a couple pairs of needle nose pliers torch & bucket of oil could make them for next to nothing. Theres some toolmaker on here that I`m sure could handle it with no problem.

sweet! send them to this thread! i would love to see what they say about making multiple copies these with needle nose pliers and a torch. that would save me lots of up front money instead of having them properly stamped and heat treated.
it they are so easy to make, why hasn't anyone done it yet?

Ok. So send me a couple of og`s and I`ll have some of are southern friends make them here in Ga. You know your in the south now don`t you.
Look I `ll pay the shipping and you`ll not only get your og`s back but 10+ copies for your time (it`s a southern thing we look out for each other). So just send them on down and everyone will be happy |

Please send me a link to the spring steel. I would definitely give a go at making a batch of these. I got nothing more fun to do. I can imagine their size probably pretty well. And I would hook everyone up if you can get me the steel reasonably.
Thanks, -Ian _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.
