5 speed? The '82 should be a 4 speed... has it been changed? It doesn't appear to have the engine moved back for 5 speed spacing, but hard to tell with the picture |

The clutch pedal is really worn like 200k+ but the driver seat apholstry looks low mileage wear, new interior??
Price is hard without seeing $3500 if she is poor $7000 you would expect absolutely no rust but with minimum general wear and service history. So probably somewhere in the middle around the $4500/$5000 looking at the pics. |

^^ Low still in this market. If I saw that van listed for 4500 within a couple hundred miles of me, I'd take off work today and go buy it (assuming it runs good enough).
6-8k. If it runs fantastic, higher. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

I was thinking the same thing. That pricing is quite low for this area. It also depends on what bodywork is or isn't hiding under that paint job. Too bad it wasn't repainted the original Yellow! |

It looks like the oil filter flange is for a 1.9 and the injection lines are bent weirdly, so the block may indeed be 1.9, but it looks like a 1.6 head on a 1.9 and if that is the case, then it would need major engine work to be corrected. Running a 1.6 head on a 1.9 block results in extremely high compression and an engine will not last long like that.
As mentioned, the engine position appears to be the '82 (4-speed) position. Post pics of the nose of the trans or that's a 4-speed.
What I am seeing is an '82 with 4-speed trans, an engine that needs major work to be reliable, and a questionable two-tone paint job that could be covering up body issues.
Interior is definitely not original as the '82 did not come with arm rests and the front seats have them although the outer rests were removed and show a strange lump in the aftermarket upholstery. |

Great observations, Waldo, your expertise on the diesels is appreciated, I learn from your posts. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

The pre-filter is not stock. The stock spin-on filters aren't particularly expensive ($10-$15 for Bosch/Mann/Etc...). There's nothing wrong with the added pre-filter, though, aside from introducing more potential places where air can get pulled into the fuel system. |

I will also add to the shitty engine work list done here that they installed the 1.6D injection pump bracket, so you'll never be able to get a good timing belt cover to fit.
It needs the 1.9 backing plate and injection pump cast iron bracket, and full timing belt covers. I had to do this same job on a Rabbit Pick up a couple years ago to fix the mess a local well known VW shop had done that resulted in a broken timing belt, and the head was correct.... So you definitely got a pretty ticking bomb right there....
There's money to dump onto this van for sure and we haven't seen anything about the chassis and suspension yet.... _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

There is a lot of things going on with this van, what do you do with it , strip the paint repaint yellow, find an 80's vintage interior, or do you go for a more modern german look. It looks good but there is so much not quite right, it does have a very low mileage interior in excellent condition but that clutch pedal is really worn and shiny, we are talking many times around the clock, so it is a bit deceiving, if there is any serious rust or any major work on top then it's one you walk away from. But around $4000 without any more hidden big hitches , then at around $4K you have a nice run around van , but it will always be an oddball set up. |

I hate threads like this they always end badly. Unfortunately we have two types of people here. Hard core do it yourself people like me. We are always looking for the best deal. We are not the people to ask what your van is worth. The other group of people here want a ready to go van to go on adventures. They are willing to pay more money. Your interior looks great not stock but vary nice. I would also prefer if it had been painted in the stock color but it looks good this van is a driver to be enjoyed the the way it is. Not to be turned into something else. If you want something else this is not your van. donโt know enough about diesel vw engines to tell what head and pump are on what block. But certainly that will need some work you wonโt get away with driving it without a timing cover for long. You just have to put it on the market for what you think itโs worth and go from there.
