I have a 66 type 1 with a single port 1600, 009, Bocar pict 30 still 6 volt which has always run and idled like a champ. Suddenly the idle is extremely unreliable and dies once I restart the car it idle fine until the next episode. If im running on the freeway for a bit it will also not recover once my foot is off the gas. I've changed the points, rotor, cap, rebuilt the carb and still can not chase this down. Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance |

Just so you don't overlook somethin basic, be sure the points are adjusted properly. HTH |

As crazy as this may sound, check the auto-choke heating unit. It may not be working properly, but once the engine warms up, and its no longer needed, the car runs fine. _________________ '67s Rule & '71 Buses Too! |

All of this happens when the choke is off, I thought perhaps the choke was closing on occasion and that was the culprit but Ive stood at the carb and watch it stall out and the choke is wide open. |

Okay, maybe you need to clean-out or rebuild the carburetor. There may just be some crud in the Idle Circuit, or maybe your Float Valve is dirty causing sporatic refilling of the Carb. Or, maybe the Float has a small leak?
In any case, removing and cleaning the carb can't really hurt. Just blowing out the various passages may solve your problem. _________________ '67s Rule & '71 Buses Too! |

Thanks, I did rebuild the carb and also blew it out again last night but still no resolve, when I did the rebuild a month ago I have to admit it was what I would call a cheap kit, so I picked up new plugs and a new rebuild kit that seems to have a better quality valve, does anyone have a good link to "how to set float height? |

Had a similar situation come into our shop. Car would run fine, idle fine, and then the customer would leave only to come back with the same problem. The last time it would not re-start Long story short was i found the condensor wire had melted up against the heat riser and was grounding it out. Everything looked normal to the eye but i was not getting spark at the points even though i was getting power to the coil and out? Maybe not your problem but worth looking at. More likely your idle jet is clogged. Pull it out and assure it is not plugged |

Another thing to look at is: with your air cleaner off rev the motor to assure you are not bubbling fuel out of the bowl vent. This would indicate a bad float valve. If so replace the valve or add another washer to it. Check your oil. if the level has risen and smells like fuel this would be your problem. Good luck |
