|
|
Hello I'm new to thesamba forums section, but have surfed this site for the past several years..can't get enough of thesamba. I recently bought a 1954 Euro Oval and am thinking of grafting in a 2 fold rag section... Vehicle production April-1954 body#576833..vin#648490.
To cut or not to cut???
check it here as I can't post pics or some reason....

If you want to save yourself from humiliation and devaluing the car, don't cut into the roof unless you've got the proper 1950-55 sunroof opening. Installing a 1956-later sunroof just wouldn't be right unless your car is a 1956-later model. |

CRAZINESS! And I'm the guy that was told several times to keep my bug OG. If you must have a rag, sell the 54 you have, or keep it until you can save more money then sell it to someone who appreciates the car (not saying you don't) for a good price. Then go out and find the rag of your dreams. _________________ 57 Ragtop

Umm....what makes a '54 Beetle rare? There are way too many of those cars roaming the planet to be remotely considered "rare" |

Curious comment from a guy going by the name of "RareAir"?!?!?
I've got to agree with RareAir about the rarity of a 54. A lot depends upon your definition of "rare".
Webster says that rare is "seldom occurring or found : uncommon"
By this definition they are far from rare and you can find one for sale almost any day of the year without much looking. Something like some of the early VW models and short run specialty models really are rare but not a production run 54.
Now about cutting the top and grafting in a 2 fold? Your car, do as you wish BUT recognize that its value will PLUMMET when you go to sell it. Also the knowledgeable VW community will most likely laugh and scoff at how you butchered your 54 with so obvious a hack job.
Given that, if this car is already chopped and lowered and on a 69 pan with a giant 1600 motor displaying chrome and a cut up dash. ..... What difference does it make? It already has had its value sucked out of it so go ahead.
IF you want to graft a rag and the car is nice, wait and shell out the $1500 or more, possibly a LOT more, it is going to cost to purchase a 3 fold clip. Even at that you run the risk of value drop if the car is show quality and you are seeking top dollar for it down the road.
Also IF you do any graft DO IT NICE AND DO IT CORRECTLY or don't even waste your time and money. Too many poorly grafted in sunroofs are out there wandering the roads of America, they look nice from 20 feet away but upon close inspection have bad seams, pop rivets, screws, distortion, etc.
Contact Saggs here on Samba, he just did a graft in a clean and nice fashion using some instructions I sent him. I bet he'd be glad to share what he did with you.

Well if its not that rare of a car then Cut it up ! or better yet drive down to your local VW dealer and buy a Used 54 Ragtop..or save up a little more and get a Convertable. C'mon everybody has different ideas of what is rare or not but it's not like I see them driving down the street everyday get my drift. |

I've got a few cars in my current VW stable, and I don't think any of them are that "rare" at all. It's just that the word "rare" is used much too often. |
