'91 syncro-westy. broken alternator mounts. stripped threads int the block were re-tapped badly by someone else. the most critical thing in my mind is that now there is no tension adjusment or correct belt for the H2O pump. i can't really afford a tow home, and i can stomach draining the batteries. it'd even be interesting BETA on battery-life under conditions, but from past experience 5 miles till the coolant boils, and an hour to cool down is about as far as i'm willing to push the envelope on operating temperature thresh-holds these days; barring devil may ride emergencys.
anyone have any constructive tips, advice, or ideas? _________________ I'm living down by the river and i don't even have my 'van'... |

If you are close to a auto parts. see if they have helli coils to insert in the stripped openig for a temporary fix. You mite need to drill to the correct heli coil size. If your bolt is in good shape you should be able to reuse them.

look for fix-a-belt adjustable fan belts it's purely a at your own risk emergancy sort of repair..
also may be time for the old schoolers panty hose waterpump belt trick..
you jut have no indication if it gets thrown in transit.
the H2o pump takes 'some' effort but not ALOT of effort.. to keep the coolant flowing.
Best.. and I hope others have better more perm solutions.

While this isn't really a road side repair, and is for a 1.9 WBX on a 2WD Vanagon, here is what I did as temporary beefing up of alternator mounting bracket. (One hole had a bolt in it, that sort of held, but hole was "ovaled" the other stud was broken off, a hole in the bracket for cross bolt, was thin and enlarged)

The proper fix, IMHO, involves welding. What I did was actually pretty solid, and MAY have held for a while. But it's too big of a gamble to rely on for too lone. If, nay when it fails, you can imagine the S##t-show that would ensue!
But, if you had a cordless drill, a few fastners, and pieces of mild steel, you might be able to fabricate something like this up on the road.
Best of luck with the repair,
Neil. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA
