'73 standard. Getting rid of the gas smell.....wanna replace these hoses. The Sending Unit seal is good. I traced the smell to these hoses.
How do i remove the crimped on clamp on the vent hose to the filler neck (red arrow)
Where can I get the plastic vent tube (blue arrow)
Will I be able to get worm clamps small enough for the 3mm vent hose (green arrow)
The pic shows the gas tank vent Expansion Chamber in the trunk not the Charcoal Canister in the rear passenger side well. Lets make it informative to all. So please do not reply unless you have answers or suggestion to help. Thank you.
thanks!

That's interesting. Is that the charcoal emmision cannister? I'm not familiar will all years/models but if it is the cannister I've never seen one under the hood.

Use a set of cutters for the clamps since they are only good once. IIRC, every post I have read states that a replacement for the plastic vent tube has not been found. You should be able to find clamps small enough for the 3mm hose, but they might not be needed. I don't remember how tight the hose fits on the nipples...
Make sure you replace ALL the hoses under there, including...

All those hoses made a huge difference when I did them on my '73... _________________ 1973 Volkswagen Beetle never ending project |

if you have to reuse them you can pry them open slightly with a small screwdriver. recrimp gently with the cutters or needlenose if you have them |

Great.. we have new rules. Here's the deal> This is a forum and it's free. You post a question and you'll get opinions, questions, wrong answers and correct answers. That's the way it works and that's the way everyone learns. I always get irritated when people come in here like their paying for a service. I couldn't get the vacuum hoses that work in the engine compartment to fit onto the fittings at the gas tank. The normal 3.5mm vacuum hose was too small. I found 4mm hose at Wolfgang Int. 5mm fuel line is too big.

BTW - I bought the smallest hose clamps I could find and tightened them around a large screwdriver shaft. Then I used a hammer to gently re-shape it. I was then able to use it on the hoses.
All the plastic tubing under my trunk looks like (whitish) nylon. I haven't found a source for it. If you do, please post it here. _________________ AshMan40

Sorry if I offended anyone with my polite request to limit responses to helpful fixes and suggestions only. As u urself might appreciate when u post a question or ask for help if u didnt have to scroll through unrelated postings to look for the answers to ur posted question. How people learn is to listen, read, and they have questions, ask them.... That's how we learn, not by muddying up the original question with unrelated comments. This is not a New Rule as u called it, I made a request and u are entitled to ur opinion but it is just nicer if u kept it to urself as u obviously have nothing constructive to contribute.
I thank everyone else who replied with great information and suggestions. I appreciate it really. I will replace the hoses with ur suggestions and fixes in mind and will post results so that others may find this thread both informative and helpful.
thanks again guys. |

Easy Grasshopper. He didn't like my question muddying up his thread. If he wants to set up a defined format of appropriate responses to his questions he has that right. If you want to ask questons, you will need to go elsewhere. Now go to your room
