Can someone point me to 'full scale' template for the hole positions on an OEM VW 5 bolt wheel? I'm trying to layout the 'precise' center point of holes ...that's about all I can explain.

How about a spare tire or a drum on the car? Conversely, they're a set of five holes 205mm apart on center in a pentagon form (internal angle of 108 degrees).

I've already made a rudimentary adapter plate for my manual tire changer ..so I can get that far. But I need something VERY precise, and with about a 1/4 inch hole in the EXACT center of the plate. The reply with the geometry sounds interesting ....I see if I can give that a go.

I can try and 3d print something for you if you want. I'm not sure how much it cost to mail to canada though. It can be made pretty thin and flexible or a little thicker and not flexible. Let me know if you are interested

I guess I should explain to you guys what I'm trying to do: this is a continuation of my quest to make my own narrow white-wall tires. The idea is to set something up, fastened to the 'exact' center of the wheel, and make a 'compass' that will have a variable length arm (perhaps a single tripod leg?) to which I can attach the paint applicator. I realized today that I could probably find the dead-center of the wheel by trial & error ...and once found, make a permanent mount/swivel point to which to attach the arm. I have found several makers of wide-tip (18mm) white acrylic paint markers. I would fashion a way to attach the marker to the outer end of the arm, and then rotate it around to paint the whitewall. I want a repeatable process for future touch-up. 'Sharpie' actually makes these markers ...they're sold at Home Depot. I did a test marking on an old tire last fall and have subjected it to some pretty extreme weather conditions and it seems be holding up pretty well. So, thanks emanchester, for the 3D printing idea ...but I think I'll be able to MacGyver something together. (now comes all the "you're crazy, it will never work" comments!!)

The diameter of the bolt circle is exactly 205mm. The pattern is 5 holes each 72 degrees apart.

Fasten your paint marker to/into one end of a 2x4 with a sturdy base attached at the opposite that you can place on the floor. Jack the wheel you wish to paint off the ground to the level necessary to align your paint marker where you want your thin whitewall, move the marker into contact with the sidewall, then spin the wheel. Repeat for the other wheels.

Yeah ....I've tried the 'spin the wheel' while on the car method ...just can't get a steady enough connection / setup because the wheel is suspended at an angle and you have to keep adjusting, etc.

I would try the same method that most tire shops use for balancing... just a cone.

Get a cone of some material (wood?) and the wheel will self-center. you'll need a cone approximately 180mm in diameter at its widest point. The tire shops around me need me to bring in my 5x205 to 4x130 adapter to balance tires because they dont have cones large enough without making me drive to the "truck specific" shops.

lol

I already have a 'cone' ...in the form of a Harbour Freight portable wheel balancer ..again, too unstable for what I need. I think having the wheel fixed, on a flat surface, with the marker able to move around the wheel (rather than having the wheel move around the marker) is a more practical way to go.

Try looking for a router jig for making circles. They have a center pivot and precisely spaced holes for different diameters. Should get you started.

That's a good suggestion!! I've checked out several router jigs online, and I can certainly learn from the way they are set up ...especially some of the DIY versions.

Digger, Did you finish this? I'm interested and would like to see a pic of your set up. Also, where did you get the marker pens from? How many did you need per wheel?

Some are doing it all wrong. Here is how to measure bolt patterns.

I've decided that its easier to use the center of the wheel, as opposed to using the bolt holes, to line up a pivot. The problem now is finding wide tip white paint markers .....lots of sources for wide tip, black markers ....but not white paint markers. I ordered 5 (minimum for a special order) from a local supplier, but they turned out to be some kind of crayon, not a paint marker. $50 ....and I can't return them. So ....does ANYONE know a source for a 3/4 inch tip, white paint marker?
