Got one with a small parts lot, trying to date it. Looks like this one:

But does not have the "1" on the front (so not a 2 part book). This '61 has this number in the back:

Mine has 530 319 20

But no date after. On one page it mentions transporter specs "to '59", and seems to have all 25 and 36hp data.

My guess is '59 or '60? Any ideas?

TIA

The "1" is for Type 1.

i've gotta disagree.
my 1/61 books have type 1 and type 2 info in it, and makes clear reference to which type the information is for (passenger vehicles and/or transporter and or industrial engine).
i have "without guesswork" booklets with 1 or 2 on the covers, some with no number, and they cover all models for that particular year. i never did understand what the "big" numbers on the covers meant.

edit: i just looked at the two "january 1961" booklets i have. they both have january 1961 on the back of the cover. they have different colored covers. the #2 has a blue cover, and is dated 11/60. the #1 has a greenish cover like the one above, and is printed 1/16.

as far as dating it the one in question, John, my January 1959 and my January 1960 (no "big" numbers on the cover) have the same 530 319 20 number in the back.

Thanks Hazetguy. Yeah, I think the "2 part" books came out in '61, and that is what the big numbers are for.

Do yours have dates in them anywhere??

My 1959 book doesn't have a 1 or a 2 on it.

My #1 without guesswork book cover is a light green color and is dated on the back October 1963.

Hi Folks,

I did a search through the forums for "Without Gueswork" and got over 350 hits. I went through a few of them and then decided there was no compilation of what was printed, so I started a new thread. I got a lot of data right away and was so busy keying things in, it took a while for me to follow the pointers to this thread!

Oops!

But now that it's there, lets make use of the fact that I have actually got a list going. You can find the thread here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=388562

Note that I'm looking for the following data:

<print date, month / year>, <proper title>, <subtitles, eg: "USA and Canada"> <cover color>

This is a little more than we were getting from this thread...

Thank you for your contributions!

One key question I have is, when did they _start?!_ I guess we may never know for sure, but '56 seems to be the earliest known date at this point.

Thanks again, RT
