I know Wiggy noticed this one--as did I--very cool original '52 Bug from Ohio displayed in the "HPOF" class at the AACA Eastern Division National Fall Meet at Hershey, PA. I just posted a couple of photos of it in the split gallery--here's one:
Quoting from an information card displayed with the car:
"The car was first purchased by a man from east central Ohio. At the time there were no Volkswagen dealers in the area. A man from Wheeling, West Virginia purchased the car for him. Both of the men flew to New York City to pick up the car. Then they drove it back to eastern Ohio. The car is thought to be the first Volkswagen in east central Ohio. The cost of the car was $1650 tax + title. The car has had only two owners and has always remained in the area.
Production date = February 11th, 1952. Delivered February 15th, 1952 to Volkswagen Distribution company New York, New York. The car is one of 601 Volkswagens sold in the United States that year." _________________ Stock Steve

There was also a super-nice '55 Porsche in the Hershey car show this year that I couldn't resist taking a picture of:

Wow, if thats an actual "Continental" 356 that is truly one rare bird, not many were produced before they had to stop using the Continental name, beautiful color as well, thanks for the pic!

Sorry for hijacking, but an interesting story of the resto on possibly the oldest Continental Porsche in North America:

Would have been interesting if it were a late '52. I think the end of the JK is documentable to have been between about June '52 ans Zwitter.... _________________ John Henry

Way COOL... another Hoffman car!! That one could be the long lost twin of mine too.. right down to the Hell Gruen L16 Wheels.... and once again.. on a Hoffman Car we find.. a Cyclone Air Cleaner.
Did anyone get a pic of the interior of that car?... I am thinking mine had beige carpet and black mats.. but I went with the beige mats.. and have been hating the decision ever since.
It's interesting they talk about it being the first VW sold in Ohio... I have been told by 2 past owners that mine was the First VW sold in Oregon, but cant verify it because the Oregon DMV wont give me records of the registrations.
Here's mine from the Chirco Show in Tucson on Sunday.
pics courtesy of Everett Barnes... I heart you Everett. _________________ DB

That OG '52 is absolutely amazing. I could stare at that picture all afternoon.
Question for anyone who knows regarding this car's bumper overriders. I commonly see these referred to as "'52 only" overriders (e.g. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=512440 or http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=613971). I have gleaned from at least one source that these were actually first used in late '51. Given that many changes were introduced each model year in October, is the "'52 only" reference a simplified way of saying from October '51 through October '52 or is the inference that these truly were only used in 1952. Same question asked another way - does anyone know the range of dates this version of overrider was in use?
This is one of the key items I am missing from my cabrio (October 15, 1951). I checked Garwood for this information and surprisingly, it does not mention when this change went into effect (at least I couldn't find it). For the last 50 plus years, my car has had '53 bumpers on it. I was able to purchase a nice set of bumper blades from Buddy Hale that are correct for my '51, but I am still looking for that perfect set of overriders. |

It is my belief that they were always options, not shipped with the cars from Wolfsburg. However they were dealer options, and I'd guess that many dealers would install them on cars in a new sale for extra $$, or a perk.
They have become fairly rare, when I do see them they are $400-$500, almost right up there with the "T's"... but I see fewer of them than the Ts as well.
I have one I restored and will use it on my '51 std, the only "accessory" that car will get.... _________________ John Henry

Many thanks for the information Mike. Can you direct me to your source for the dates these were in use?
