I have the tri-mill in ceramic, picked it up on eBay.
No discoloration. A little louder, but I like it. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia |

Like mentioned above. I bought the raw metal set and coated with peanut oil. After 4 coats it's turned a very nice dark gun metal gray. I like the look and hopefully it won't rust. Of course living in bone dry AZ will help with that as well.
Whoa...it was 80 today, blue sky and crusing with the top down. The sound of this Tri-Mil exhaust set-up is very nice. Especially compaired to the EMPI Monza I replaced.

Ok I looked at the topic on how to do it. I still haven't put the Ceramic Empi on or the black one too many projects. The empi looks vey close to the tri-mil but who knows if it will last? 85 bucks black. 180 for the ceramic/ j-pipes cramic another 30 |

You'll have to start with raw steel. So do whatever you need to get rid of the paint and / or rust. I found this thread over in the eurovan forum about different exhaust set ups. They were talking smack about the Por-15 exhaust paint...which I was going to use. As it turns out a couple of the guys were doing this oil rub to the raw metal, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Basically like seasoning your cast iron skillet or dutch ovens. I've applied 2 coats of oil so far and it's looking real good. Turning a nice dark brown. It should turn almost black from what I've read and never rust at all. We'll see how this holds up and how often I have to recoat...Here is AZ where it's hot, dry and almost no humidity...I hope it'll last a good long time. |
Here is the link to the Por-15 discussion and oil treatment info. Good luck.

Hey mike-buggsbuggy...do you have any pictures of these EMPI systems? Where did you pick them up? I've done a few searches and haven't seen anything that looks like the Tri-Mil exhaust. Just courious where you picked them up and if they were a new item.
Pictures can be posted very easily. Go to the Gallery tab. Scroll down till you find the category you want to put the picture in. Then click the "add photo" in the upper left corner. Pretty easy from there... _________________ PRAISE THE LOWERED.

I have not seen the tri mill exhaust on any EMPI site. I like the look of these sets, but I doubt you will ever find the EMPI name on them. _________________ 74 181 Thing

By the way, that's a Bay Window rear seat day bed being used as a piece of office furniture behind the exhaust! |

This will give you an idea what a ceramic coated extractor/muffler will look like after 11 years and 100,000 + miles. Ya I know its a bay not a thing. I never clean this extractor, the idea was not to scrub off the ceramic coating in order to make it last longer. So far the idea seems to have worked.
The one on my 74.
Both are Kymco extractors. I'd never buy anything but a ceramic coated extractor after having had such good luck with these. |
