After working all summer and searching the Samba for months my 18 year old son found this 1967 Beetle locally. After careful inspection he decided to buy it for his everyday driver. The PO had done a great job with the engine but had not gotten to the body - but it was rock solid needing only paint and a headliner. Paint work started immediately and took about three weeks since he and I did all of the sanding at each step.
After paint it was on to the window seals, trim, and headliner. My son and I did the window seals and my wife did the headliner. The headliner, an original style, not the one piece, took two full days but came out very nice with only two areas where we learned what to do differently next time.
Finally, we pulled the 36 HP doghouse shroud and installed thermostat flaps and a thermostat. What difference that made!
About a month after it was finished my son said his breaks were very soft and the peddle was very sloppy. A little investigation revealed that the master cylinder was leaking at the secondary cup or seal. He would have to park it until I had a chance to get a new one and install it. The next day I came home and he was driving the car. After asking why he would do that he explained that he recalled that there was a brand new Brax in the basement where I store my ’68 in restoration parts. He took the liberty of “borrowing” it, whereupon he and a friend replaced the bad one after school. I inspected his work and realized I could not have done it any better. I just grinned, walk into the house, and smiled at my wife and told her another air head was born – I could not be any prouder.

tell your wife I'll be needing a new headliner after mine gets painted too
I really want to learn how to install them myself, but that's the kind of thing I'll leave to the pros. |

There, I fixed it.
Don't forget that the Mrs. did one of the harder jobs. The headliner. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I'd say your whole family caught the bug quite some time ago, nice work.
A couple of corrections; You do not have a 36 hp engine. It is a 40 horse or larger. Your gnerator stand bolts to the case but on a 36 horse it is cast as part of the case. Find the engine # below the generator stand and look it up on this site. Stock would have been a 1500 cc.
Not all fan shrouds are "dog houses". A stock fan shroud for a 67 would not be a dog house shroud. The DH shroud has a house in the back of the housing to make room for the offset oil cooler that takes it out of the cooling air flow for cylinder #3. Started with @ 1972 model year.
Very good idea installing the thermostat and flaps. |

You don't know the half of it! She did the headliner only a few days after here last Chemo treatment for stage three ovarian cancer. She is one hell of a woman, wife, and mother. We are VERY lucky to have her.
BTW, she is a VW air head in her own right. Not content to just watch and support us, she bought her own Ghia to cruise around in. She did her own research and when she found what she wanted she struck at 3 A.M. about 18 months ago on ebay, flew to California by herself and closed the deal then had the car shipped home.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The FAN SHROUD is a 36 HP doghouse type. The engine serial number is HXXX XXXX but modified to a 9.5:1 CR 1600 with dual Kadrons, a full flow oil system, and Gene Burg merged exhaust thanks to the PO. My son and I modified the aftermarket shroud to accept the thermostat flaps. _________________ Guilt is a useless emotion |

That is a great looking 67, it has just the right look and a sun roof. Your wifes Ghia is a spot on beautiful car. Has she put it in any show? Congratulations on having an air cooled family. _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner
