Google “Vanagon lock cylinder rekeying” for images. That will yield dozens of helpful images and articles. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

Without an assortment of tumblers it is going to be difficult to match an existing key. Actually swapping the tumblers is easy. If you want a sense of what is going on, insert the wrong key and you will see that the brass tumblers are not going flush to the cylinder.
If one is close, you might get away with filing it down. If one is not close, you could get away with removing it and the spring completely. I don't think the thieves are actually picking the lock. |

I agree, Mark. When I syncronized ( ) the mis-matched locks in our rig, many of the swapped tumblers were close, but still needed filing to work smoothly. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

Or get matching barrels for all five locks with four keys from Vancafe:

What if I have 6 doors and the ignition....
Five and the ignition work but the other door is just not working.

Pull both front door handles off. Remove the tumbler barrel from each. When you insert the key into the working barrel, you will notice the brass tumblers are all flush with the barrel.
Now insert the key into the barrel that does not work. You will see which tumblers are not correct because they are not flush. You might be able to mix and match the tumblers in the barrel to improve how well they work. For the ones that don't, a file or deleting will get you there.
The above details are for when you don't have an assortment of brass tumblers to try. |

These barrels are aftermarket new ones, which use a AH key profile I believe, as opposed to the N profile of the Vanagon.
I'm not sure the wafers are the same... |
Same wafers for the AH (and previous iterations like HV, VB, etc.) and the Vanagon N cylinder. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia

Convert to power doorlocks, so you'll rarely if ever need to use a key for anything except the ignition. _________________ Casey--

That looks like the slider lock cylinder. You can rekey it easily, there is a thread here that covers it. If this is an aftermarket handle and the original N profile key blank doesn't fit into the cylinder then rekeying it won't get you any closer to using 1 key for the entire vehicle. |
