Okay, CIP1 is out of stock on their good quality, thick sound deadener. Wolfsburg West's (surprisingly) is cheaper and looks to be of a lesser quality (doesn't even have the cut-outs).

Anyone know who sells the good stuff?

Do you have a local sound shop? Automotive restoration custom shop? They should sell the stuff.

Check with BFY - they have some REALLY nice stuff. Have seen it on a couple cars and am getting it for my project.

Just looked into BFY. They have the same $30 cheap stuff everyone else sells. I knew I shouldn't have put off ordering CIP1's kit till the last day of their most recent sale!

Damn it all to hell!!! Mad

As for local sound shops? I'm not talking interior products here. I'm looking for the 3-piece tarboard kit for the engine compartment.

Not sure if you have one nearby where you are, but here in PDX there are 2 "Discount Auto Imports" stores, blew me away when I walked in and asked for tarboard engine liner and the guy says, "sure, hang on" goes back and gets it.

Mine is not tarboard though but something very similar, very dense too...haven't checked it out too closely, still in the packaging...I'm at work at the moment.

The guy behind the counter said they don't make them out of tarboard anymore (?)

Sure they still make them out of tarboard. As far as I know, everyone that sells them carry the tarboard. The difference seems to be in the thickness, the fit, and wheather or not the cut-outs are present.

I could easily run to my local supplier and get the cheap tarboard, but I want something better for my money.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Might want to do a seach in the Buyer's Remorse section on BFY. They are flakes.

I just received delivery of a set of "German quality (thick)" firewall insulation from CIP1 – looks like they're back in stock. The UPC sticker says “1/28/2009” – 69Custom, it looks like you missed it by a week :(

To hijack a hijacked thread: Dumb question about these boards... this stuff looks nothing like the OEM tarboard I pulled off... So for the new stuff, which side out? the fuzzy material sde or the waxy smoother surface?

Look at the pull down list, the "new stuff" is what you want.

Actually, I didn't miss out. CIP got their shipment in before I placed my order through oeveedub. I had other busines to conduct with CIP so I did it all in one shot. The thing is, they got the stuff in sooner than I thought, but just neglected to update their website with the new stock.

To answer the question asked: the felty-like material goes inside. It's pretty obvious when you check which way the flaps bend. True, it doesn't look stock. It's a little taller than the stock stuff, cuts easily enough if you leave it in the sun for a bit, and seems as thick (if not thicker) than the OEM tar board. Mine is installed but I have yet to completely set the tabs for the main panel.

All in all, I found it decent to work with.

Thanks for the reply 69Custom.

I’m a bit embarrassed to say, but this is a case of me not looking closely enough and jumping on the forum with a question... makes sense now that I look at the folds of the side pieces.

Although I’m not too thrilled by the look of it (a bit blotchy and easily scratched) as long as it does the job... I was almost hoping that the fuzzy material side was supposed to face out.

Another note to those who are considering this insulation: as 69Custom mentioned, this stuff comes a bit oversized and does not have any holes in it. In my opinion, this is great since it can be tailored to fit. Luckily I kept my original insulation so it’s just trace and cut. Also, my Super is an autostick so my firewall has more holes in it than a stimulus plan...

Of course a guy from CA suggests leaving it in the sun before cutting – I’m from the other CA (Canada) so I propped it up by the fireplace to soften (the daily temps right now are just above freezing)

Thanks again - this was my first post, and the Samba came through :)

In thinking about it, I'm also glad the tarboard wasn't precut. I understand that these holes need to be in different places depending on application, and trace-and-cut works well.

I had a some issues trimming the excessive height at the base of it, but that was only because I nealry had it installed before I realized it interfered with my bellhousing seal. It would've been easier to check it all first, cut it straight at the top, then cut my holes for the wiring harness.

Like you, I had wished the "attractive" side was visible, but when it comes down to it, this is still a much cleaner look than the traditional backing (something more black and les gray would've been nice though).

What about fuel injected cars. I didn't see where you could order for a super beetle convertible with fuel injected engine tin. Yes the tar boards are different for fuel injection.

Just a follow up on the CIP1 tar board: stay away from it.

It sagged in March temperatures before the engine was installed. Within 2 1/2 years I had to remove the sides as they had warped to the point of resting on the end castings. The back panel is warped as far as it can go with the tabs holding it in place.

Well that sucks, as I have my engine out now, I will searching for a good replacement soon, let me know of any GOOD tar boards.
