72 super beetle. long story short, rebuilt the engine - new seals, gaskets, exhaust, spark plugs, wires, etc... put it back in and it doesn't run right - - will only run with the choke on! (take choke off, it dies) we are thinking there is a vacuum leak, but cannot find anything (have re-tightened all connections). We have adjusted the set screws on the side of the carb and still a no go without the choke! PLEASE HELP!!! By the way - not sure if they have anything to do with eachother, but the ignition coil is REALLY hot!! (found a wiring diagram on another post and will verify that it is wired correctly). |

Tell us about the gaskets you used to mount the carb to the intake and the intake to the heads. |

ok - the carb is a 34 pict 3. ignition, i'll have to check.
the gasket from the carb to intake is a flimsy paper-ish thing. if i remember correctly, the intake to the heads is a metal gasket. |

Sounds like a vacuum leak. _________________ Glenn

Had a riding mower that did the same thing. It turned out to be a loose fuel line clamp which allowed air to enter the fuel stream which made the engine run lean and that in turn demanded more choke to enrich the fuel mix. Also take a look at your fuel filter it may be starving the carb if it is clogged. Hope this helps. |
