can anyone ID what these holes might be for? they seem to be too precise and evenly spaced to be a random PO thing. One of those tonneau cover things maybe?

they are on both the inside and outside of the doors

No help at all for those little holes, but what is even odder, is the key lock on the driver side back door. Are there key slots on all four door handles?
Also, the little carriage bolt on the front of the driver side rear fender. Are there holes on the rear of the front fenders and the front of the passenger fender also? Might indicate that your Thing had running boards at one time. Have you found any "blue" anywhere like under the trunk lid, or behind a dash panel? Might indicate that it was an Acapulco before.

Im not 100% sure, as its in transit ATM. But it has the smaller black running boards on it now that arent readily apparent in the photos

I dont think it was an alcapulco, but the PO had it bead blasted because , in his words, it had a "weird ocean mural that he couldnt sand off" when he got it, so it might have originally been one I suppose.

He just put the locking handles on the rear doors by accident when he had it repainted.

Hopefully it shows up on tuesday!

I went back and looked at the photo, yes I saw the running board in the picture.

Holes around the inside rear perimeter are for the mounting of the OEM hardtop as seen in this photo.

Weird. Maybe it had a hard top on it at some point and sometime in the past 50 years someone decided it needed those other holes.
