I found a local guy that has a 2 Barrel carb with a chrome one piece high performance intake that was definitally bigger than a stock setup. My question is, will I feel any seat of the pants gain running this setup on a stock 1600 DP motor with an EMPI performance exhaust? I know you guys are gonna try to convince me to do dual carbs but I don't have the money for that just yet Wink

It would be used in a 73 Super Beetle BTW

The only gain you can expect from ANY part is how well it's tuned to the rest of your combination. I've read here that the stock carbs on VW are restrictions to hp that can be remedied by bigger stuff.

The Weber progressive is a case of bog, buck or scream. Can you tune a carb? Can you tune the ignition curve? If so, there's a chance the new carb will give you gains. Before that, it will give you pains.

Regards,

Definitally not afraid of carb work, I've got a lot of mechanical experience. I was reading online that with the stock intakes with a double barrel theres no gain. Thats why I was wondering, if with a bigger 1 piece intake (1 piece from the carb mount plate to the mounts on the head) would be capabile of good performance. If not, the guy has a set of rusty dual Kadrons that need a rebuild that I might pick up instead

You should feel a difference -it will only ever really idle on two cylinders, cold starts will suck and warmup will take the whole commute. Smile

Okay, seriously, I say it will pull better from 2500 to 4500 (where you'll be shifting your stock motor right?). You'll also gain a nice throaty intake roar.

I ran a centre mount 40 dcnf for many years and it was rock solid.

what is the 2 barrel carb? I've seen weber dcnf, holley bugspray, and one other(can't remember name) use the chrome intake, weber progressive and IDFs tend to use only the aluminum centermount

but that said, any will work with a little more power as long as you tune it right

I put a 36mm D'ell on my 1600 single port decades ago. a 284 regrind cam, ported and polished heads, and a Kadron exhaust. I took it off for winter driving. I lost 15mph of top end in my 68 Ghia and it was considerably slower on acceleration.
