| Hey Folks, my cable snapped at the pedal and I was going to install the new one I just got from the depot - seemed pretty straight forward, disconnect and pull through, do the reverse for install. So I greased it up and started inserting it form the front to the rear and its getting hung up somewhere. It seems straight so Im not sure where it would be getting hung up and it doesnt seem like there is a place to "open" up the tube and try it pull it through. Any advice or tricks would be appreciated! |

There is a flexible tube over the transmission that meets up with the front of the engine tin. I bet this is where the hang up is. You can pull the tube and feed the cable through it, then put the tube back where it belongs. _________________ Eric

Thanks for the quick reply!
Just tried it, and I don't think its made it that far. Behind that I did notice it goes from metal tubing to flexible rubber, but it doesn't seem like connection is something you can take apart and then put back together. That part is right over the front on the transmission..maybe 14 inches from the part you were speaking of. |

You can pull the tube from where it meets the tin. Making the tube straight may allow the cable to feed in. _________________ Eric

If needed you can always run a cord through the tunnel and out the back.
I watched a guy do it with dental floss and a shop vac once. I was sort of impressed but have never tried it. |

I know this isn't helpful after you've already pulled out the old one, but the best way to do this is to tie a string to the rear end of your old one before you remove it. Then, when the cable is out and you have a string running through the whole length of the tube, you can tie the end of the string onto rear end of the new one and pull the new one through with the string instead of pushing it.
I find the knot on the string also help to sweep any debris out of the tube as it goes through. Amazing the crap that gets in there.
Maybe this'll help you for next time, or if you have to do the heater cables... _________________ '71 Campmobile. |

What if you blow out the tube with compressed air? Might clear out a blockage? _________________ '71 Campmobile. |

Oh man, that was a big "duh" moment for me! Great idea, although, you are correct too late this time.
The cable itself is pretty sturdy, and its made it most of the way. I can hear it it just sounds like its hitting an end thats metal. I'll give the compressed air a try tomorrow too.
Thanks again |

| Might want to squirt a bit of solvent in there to help loosen the "oogie". Put a sock or something on the engine side opening to avoid blowing a bunch of crud all over the engine compartment. |

| Ok, so tried the tricks and still cant get it to budge. Tried from the opposite side to see if I could unclog it and I think I know where its getting hung up. Its at the part where the metal tube turns into the felxable piping. Where they meet is a connector that I think its getting hung up on. It doesnt seem like I can take it apart there. What if I just cut it at the seam and had the open cable going to the engine bay. It just about a 15inch piece from that spot to the firewall. Thoughts? |

The flex section just slips onto the steel body tube, pull it off and thread the cable through from the front, then stick the end into the flex tube and replace the flex tube, continue threading...... _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

| Another trick is to put a slight bevel on the end of the cable |
