I'm trying to glue vinyl fabric to the flimsy particle board door panels in my Vanagon but I can't find anything that will bond them well. The wood is too porous. I tried contact cement and it just absorbed into the wood and stayed tacky. Any suggestions? Do I need to put something on the particle board first to make it less porous? |

If you are using DAP Weldwood contact cement you need to apply the first coat to the board and let it dry. This makes it less porous for the second coat. |

A high quality spray adhesive like 3M 80 or 90 that is UV resistant would work as well. About $15 per can. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

The 3m industrial strength, not the regular, works very very well. |

I agree that the 3M industrial strength contact cement is the ticket.
Technique also matters. Before gluing, do a dry fit. Stretch the fabric to where you want it to end up on the reverse side (ie: glue side) of the panel and mark that location with a pencil. When you are stretching the vinyl with glue on your fingers, etc, it is hard to gauge how far to stretch.
Porous materials like the Westy panels often require 2 applications of the contact cement. The vinyl has to have glue applied also and the glue needs to tack up. You can wait as long as 30 minutes for tack up, depending on temperature and humidity. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

I am on the hunt for some of this locally.
The HHR(high heat resistant) is supposed to be the stuff to use over regular contact cement or spray adhesive according to the interwebz. The over the counter stuff fails in the heat. |
