Mine started whining few days ago..sound like the one at the fan... if the bearing/bearings aren't F'ed up... can they be repacked with say...hi-temp bearing grease ?
Oh
Does anyone have a exploded diagram of the alternator _________________ Donate and help me get another aircooled dub to share with you guys www.paypal.me/WhosCare

If the bearing is making noise, it is gone. No amount of grease is gonna bring it back. Take the bearings down to your local bearing store and buy new ones. It'll cost you less than $15. _________________

does anyone know the part numbers for bearing that will work........ pulley and fan side... (I may as well replace both)
I read some of the bearings that work part #'s are the same as some vehicles idle pulley bearing and pilot bearings
I also read the VW generator and alternator bearings are the same... _________________ Donate and help me get another aircooled dub to share with you guys www.paypal.me/WhosCare |

You are doomed to fail. Take the thing apart and take the old bearings to your local bearing store. You are guaranteed to get the right bearings for what your generator needs. _________________

No sir. Pulley end is 17mmIDx40mmODx12W. The dimensions you listed are for the fan end. You also need to be careful in which bearing you spec. There are many that have the correct dimensions but are incorrect for the application. If you are going with SKF you will want to ensure you get the RS or Z series bearing. Good luck _________________ Bobby

great idea...but before I take it apart I want to have both bearing in hand ready to go... I hate stopping in the middle of a project to run to the parts store..then find out they gots to order it...or even if got it in stock...I lose my momentum and might blow off putting it back together for the day..... know what I mean _________________ Donate and help me get another aircooled dub to share with you guys www.paypal.me/WhosCare |

Little update...
I'm on my lunch break... I swung by mom dukes and took the belt off...I have the BMD serpentine system... I spun the alt and didn't really make a sound...the pulley/shaft had no play that I could feel by hand... now the idler pulley for the BMD kit is another story...it has some play and when spun sounds loudly like dry bearings.... I'm gonna replace the ones in the BMD idler pulley 1st... reinstall the belt start her up...and see where I'm at... I hope it's it...cause that will be less hassle to replace _________________ Donate and help me get another aircooled dub to share with you guys www.paypal.me/WhosCare

Aha - this is the first time you mentioned that you have a non-stock pulley system - one must always disclose full information when asking for help, no detail is too small. Then that idler bearing is likely what's bad. I would never run the same bearings they come with if you drive your VW any reasonable distance. The bearings look like the came out of a roller skate or skate board.
Mine were replaced with bearings almost twice as big, and freaking stout - but in the end I went back to a stock system. I was just lucky mine stayed together to the hotel that night or I'd have been F'd.
Thanks again Doug & Howard if you're reading . . . see you guys in a couple of weeks in Havasu and I won't be driving all day Saturday to parts stores!
New bearings on shaft, old races in middle, pulley before machining.

They did the same for me on my first system. I just didn't want to email them every time they went out. _________________ Gerg
