Watch this Video! (As you please!)

http://www.britishpathe.com/video/atlantic-kon-tiki-arrives

3 Men in a raft (+ 2 kittens) cross the Atlantic ocean in 89 days. Why? To show it could be done! I'm not as optimistic about my bus, but I'm a gonna try! Pictures of the haul. Thanks to Richard (dickie) for giving me the chance to ressurect this forgotten treasure!

I ran across a sweet little railroad town (Golden). Totally unbelievable!

Yup, it's pretty bad. There's no frame rails left. This is hands down the rustiest bus I have ever seen (let alone work on!). Wish me luck Smile

Thanks! It was in Vernon (gorgeous place!) and Richard put me on to it. It was actually in the mountains and he worked his magic to get it into town.

There is a 'wish' list of metal parts that are totaling just over $3500(!). The other plan is to find a clean chassis and do a body swap. But that would still mean doing belly pans etc. Haven't even posted the RUSTY pics!

The last option is to forget VW metal and do a custom chassis. The guy (Louis) that I bought something from has a sweeet 21 Window with a custom chassis. Body dropped(?), air bags, newer style engine etc.

Lots of options on this one!

I have a 67 21 just like this that we got early this year, have gone down the donor chassis route as well as a donor front end

I do know of another donor chassis just inside Colorado, near Arizona, which he might still sell, if you want a lead...

As I'm sure you already know not the easiest things to ship around!

Good luck, my own build thread starts soon....

Wow, Vernon, that is quite the drive!!

Good luck figuring out what you're going to do with this one, but I hope I see another 57 panel driving around town first Wink

Cheers

The Panel is running/driving/stopping/shifting Smile I have learned my lesson to finish one before starting another (well except for my 23, it's abandoned it looks like).

Just ordered $800 worth of metal from Ken @ Concept 1 and that's just one third of it! The chassis swap idea is out as it's basically double the work for me.

I know of a donor front , cut just behind the vent box. Steve from AVR autoparts in Kelowna was going to sell it to me. I haven't seen it but he usually supplies me with good stuff.
I'm just putting it out there 'cus that bus is going to need a fair bit of pieces.

Vernon...who knew.

gordo.

Welded in the left frame rail. Yes I know, not a VW part, but I have to do something to re-fortify the area Smile I have accounted for the deflection by altering the outriggers a few millimeters.

Welding outside is not so fun as the wind takes away the gas but it turned out fine.

Does Gerson make the rear piece (right side of picture where the floor/wheel wells go)?

Also contemplating a few other more radical changes to this bus Smile

I got the frame rail idea from this picture (54 Barndoor).

I would if I could find a donor Smile But I'm outta luck so gotta go the boring old way I guess!

No pics but I spent 4 hours cleaning all the broken glass, wasps nest, flaky rust and cutting out more rusty areas. The plan is to reinforce any structural stuff (and around door openings etc) then tackle the FUN stuff.

I have a bet with Dave for $50 that it will be solid in 60 days. Challenge accepted.

Waiting for parts, sigh! Still cutting away bad metal but I did finally manage to weld in 2 top hats after MUCH measuring and hemming and hawing. Mostly the latter. Nothing gets done 'looking' at it and I fell into that trap again. So, more work, less look!

Cut up the nose.

And the floor

4 piddly welds took THIS LONG?? Omg. (But those ones are the most important!

There's no way to fit this panel without cutting it. It's an 'ok' piece and because I have nothing else available it will have to do. The sides are good, The center is not even close.

And the reason the partition isn't close is because I ordered the wrong one! I didn't realize that they come in early/late and my supplier just lists one part and I grabbed it.

My mistake!

Yes, when I saw the glasses with their awesome patina- The song "Come Together" by the Beatles blasted out in my brain imagining John Lennon himself driving this beast back in the day with a huge smile on his face. Cool
